Please, please read to the end and vote!!!
1. This is one sketch for the potential main character in my book.
2. Here is another rough sketch.
4. And a fourth. Which do you prefer, if any? This is for a dog for a little boy.
Matt’s Daily Inkling prompt today is: How do you know when the time is right to add a new pet to the family? What’s the most interesting story in your life of adding a pet?
Are you picking up my vibes, Matt???? Can you believe that I am at this very moment trying to choose the prototypes for the three puppies in my new story book entitled “I Really Want a Puppy!”
I’d appreciate everyone voting on whether they find any of these preliminary rough sketches appealing for a story book for 3 to 8 year olds. I need three puppies, members of the same litter, and I’m trying to choose which one the little boy would like. If you would just vote yes or no on # 1, 2, 3 and 4 and indicate which you think would be most appealing for a little boy. The style of #1 is very different. After seeing it, I requested more cartoonish sketches. This is a story book for children age 3 to 8. Remember, these are preliminary sketches. If you like more than one, vote for up to three, but indicate which you think a little boy would like the most. If you don’t like any of them, let me know and it is back to the drawing board.
For Matt’s prompt: https://normalhappenings.com/2018/10/16/plus-one-daily-inkling/
Dog #1 is fine and strikes me as a little more manageable, but dog #2 looks like a really rambunctious type. Possibly what a boy would like most. #3 +#4 look very cartoon-ish — more so than I’d care for, but I’m not a boy of that age range. 🙂 What’s the dog in your story like?

Thanks, Christine, for the comments. The dog is more or less in the boy’s imagination until the end. He’s loyal, protective, curious and playful.. typical puppy. The first one is so soft looking that it seemed perhaps not so much of a boy’s dog as the last one would be, but lots of people like number two as well. I need to ask some six to eight year old boys, as some have suggested. This has really helped and I do appreciate the comments.

Excellent drawings – the fourth is eagerly appealing

Thanks, Derrick. He appeals the most to me, too.

Dog #1 appeals – maybe because it’s a more complete sketch.

I know. Number one is so lovely, but hopefully when the others are colored they will be more appealing as well. I think a little girl would love number one..and grown up little ones as well, obviously! Thanks so much for your opinion.

The painting (#1) is GORGEOUS!! 😉
#2 Has a more little rogue look. 🙂
I could see 2,3 and 4 being the same dog.
I’d choose #1.

I agree I like 4 but I really like 1 but 2,3,4 are the same dog.

They are all from the same litter but one will be curlier, one more of a rascal.. and different colors. I agree they need to look a bit more different.

Thanks, Bob. Truth in all you say. I want the one that looks the most roguish to be the one he chooses so appreciate your opinion.

Wrong demographic, Judy. I love them all. I asked my grown up boy children. They like number 2.

Thanks so much, Tracy. The best research is asking boys—of any age.

Thanks, Carol. Most agree with you. Others like number 4. Luckily there are more puppies than one!

Why can’t he have all the puppies? I think 2 or 4.

We can, Kelley. I think two three and four once they are colored will have more appeal, like number one.. but if they are different colors and different sizes and curliness it will make them more into individuals.

#3 is saying, “Please take me home with you.”

Puppies have that ability and I have well-learned over the past 17 years. So far I have proven incapable of overlooking a stray puppy!

No. 4 would be my type of dog, but they are all good.

Thanks. He looks more likely to get into trouble, doesn’t he?

1or 4. One looks more realistic. I can picture the boy running with the dog.
4 just looks more playful. I can picture 4 getting into innocent trouble like a young boy.

I agree, Cee. I think number four. My sister thinks he should have smaller ears, though. I think the boy would like the one who is more of a rascal whereas the mother would choose one of the cuter and fluffier ones. Two and four seem to be the front runners. This has really really helped to hear opinions.

Two is cute .. but 4 is more of a rascal. Just depends on how you write the boy.

I think 4 will be the little boy’s dog, for sure.

I’m going with the first because he is the most doglike. He can grow up and BE a dog, not a cartoon.

Thanks, Marilyn. A good point.

I would like a middle ground between the coloured #1 and the sketchy rest, maybe #1 with bigger, more expressive eyes. No idea what a little boy would pick, though.

I was thinking the same.. have him color the finished sketches. He was just showing me possibilities with sketches. I appreciate so much everyone voting on their favorites.

I like number one best, but number 4 does look like some character? What is the dog to be like? If he is a rascal, then number 4. Best wishes!!

Actually, they do end up naming one Rascal!!! How intuitive you are.

i love all of them, and i love the first particularly, but from a child’s view (having been through this a few times) the second one draws me most.

Thanks so much, PV…It really helps to hear your opinion. I think if the second is colored like the first, it will be more appealing.
