Paronomasia
Sunshine lies today.
It lies on the backs of the cupped palms of plumeria,
floats on the surface of the pool.
The outdoor cat
brings it in on his gleaming back
as he streaks through a sun ray
on his way to steal the indoor cat’s breakfast.
So, though I am prone to gloom,
I compromise with a small journey
to meet friends for coffee and croissants
and conversation reminiscent of talks
with ghosts before they were ghosts.
My bright hair the color of the hay
that he picked out of it.
His skin the gleam of ebony
in the high mountain air.
That sparkling past turned dull
before its ending.
Choosing which part to remember,
that daily decision.
Whether we choose to say
that sunshine lies or not.
Prompts today are sunshine, reminiscent, prone and compromise. Here are the links:

I find that memory is often very selective. Sometimes we remember the good and at other times it is the traumatic. I liked this line in you poem:
and conversation reminiscent of talks
with ghosts before they were ghosts.

Glad you liked and “got’ that line.

ahhhh. this is so true. the spring blooms and sunshine cheers but they can only delight us if they allow them to. ❤

I’m sure you mean if we allow them to and if so, I totally agree.

I admire the wordplay and the delicate imagery of sunshine lying ‘on the backs of the cupped palms of plumeria’ and floating on the surface of the pool. But it was the cat that brought a grin to my face, Judy – he reminds me of my two! I also recognise the ‘conversation reminiscent of talks / with ghosts before they were ghosts’. And I love the final lines.

“conversation reminiscent of talks with ghosts before they were ghosts,” … sigh the heart remembers and it can only endure so much.. ❤️

But ghosts need to be let loose of. Still, they reappear now and then.

Nice lines: “and conversation reminiscent of talks
with ghosts before they were ghosts.” And the daily decision about which parts of the past to remember.

Thanks, Frank. I’m writing a book-length memoir right now so dealing with a lot of ghosts.

Smooth transition from plumeria to cats to conversation to reminiscence, tidily tied together with sunshine, or lack thereof!

I enjoyed the double meaning of “sunshine lies”. I think it appeared relentlessly in your images to remind that all will be well.

I had to make sure you “got” it. Ha.

I like that double meaning, too. It works really well. It’s a great piece, a reminder to look for the good.

I loved the way you worked back to the opening line, and so much excellence on the journey. This was so well written Judy – kudos!
