We follow different orbits. We dislike each other’s friends.
When we are together, the confusion never ends.
Though I respect your choices, I fear they’re never mine.
I’ve strolled a crooked pathway. You’re rarely out of line.
You have a place within my heart but we rarely phone.
We each chose a direction and wandered off alone
collecting lives around us where the other does not fit.
We’ve analyzed our friendship and found the end of it.
Have we made the right decision, or should friendship never end?
Is it wrong to leave old friends behind as we round the bend?
It’s hard to keep momentum when pulling a long train,
and holding onto everyone we’ve once loved is inane.
When you’ve somehow lost the trust that you thought would last forever,
and when you’re simply bored by one you once found fun and clever,
sometimes we have to face the fact we’ve loved someone in vain
and all the joys we shared are ones we will not share again.

Lots of truth in this poem. 🙂 I had to break up with a friend of more than 30 years. It was hard to do, but absolutely necessary.

I enjoyed the well-worded verse. Not sure if I agree, as feelings can change and every relationship ever formed will have times when it feels blah. Some associations are draining and should end, some end because of distance, but overall it’s best not to burn too many bridges.
I even have times when I’m ready to chuck out all my houseplants — but then they bloom again and I’m reminded why I keep them. 😉

Well, I am always open to friendships blooming again and it has happened in the past, but it has to be a two-way street and there are times when enough effort has been exhausted on my part to resurrect it and I just let it die a natural death.
