After Two and a Half Months, Finally Finished!!!

After 2½ months, the murals that Jesus Lopez Vega and son Eduardo have been painting on the outside of my house and studio are finally finished. Forgottenman asked to see the total results, so I’m sharing them with you as well. When Bob and I bought our house in 2001, the first thing we did was to go out and buy one of Jesus’ paintings in a local gallery. Here is that and other paintings I’ve bought from him over the years and other mural work he’s done in my house:

The inside of my street entrance door, with pedestals that once held two large Precolumbian replicas of a man and a woman that Bob went out and bought in an antique store while I was waiting to sign the papers to buy the house. Both since tipped over by the kittens now turned cats–and turned into flower pots. ( The remaining parts of the sculptures, not the cats!)

And this is one I bought a few months later when I moved to Mexico.
A Huichol motif
This is actually the etching plate of one of Jesus’ limited editions that I bought and asked him to paint as though it was one of the etchings.
This arch around the window I asked him to paint to surround and complement the masks I’d hung there using a motif on my sofas. I have changed sofas since then but made sure to match the arch!

      That is an effigy of Frida, who spent most of her time up there for 15 years–surveying the neighborhood. When she died I had her ashes put inside and had it concreted to her favorite spot on my dome. She grew up with cats and thought she was one. There is a stairway up to the patio that adjoins the dome..

    Can’t believe I have been here 19 yrs either! Where did they go? Your house is beautiful should be in a magazine! Still l.ike to see a Jesus dog waiting to get in your front door! Its raining!! Whooppee

      They are all Aztec and Mayan symbols. I researched and made a six foot long paper with the ones I wanted on it.. Then found several plumed serpents and Jesus constructed one that was an amalgam of several of them. The patterns around the doors are all based on churches that Rodolfo Morales, a Oaxacan artist, altered using all Mexican-looking saints, symbols and colors. I photographed them and asked Jesus to use them in the embellishment of all of the entrances to my house. I also did a retablo based on a doll I saw in the corridor of his house. I’ll put a photo of it on my blog for you to see.
      It is in a retablo entitled “Jugetes.”

        I did think they were representations but wasn’t sure of the culture. Now you say Mayan and Aztec I can see their images in Jesus’s brilliant work. I see what you meant in a comment a while ago about knowing when to stop. The house looks just wonderful with the right amount of embellishment 🙂

    Thank you for posting those pix. Fantastic work. I love all the color (who’d have thought a bright orange house with blue trim?) and I especially love the patterns around your doors. You own a piece of paradise.

    Thanks so much for the wonderful photos and explanation of how each came into being. So much to see and digest, that it will take a long time for me to cover it all. I bet even you will see things you missed before.

    A beautiful way to spend your life, both inside your little recluse doing the things you love, yet connected to beautiful surroundings and people outside, doing exactly what life has for you, while passing on the scenes and thoughts in rhyme and prose on to us less fortunate persons.

    Just came in from cutting the seed stalks of the Indian Blanket. So great when they are blooming, but then the seeds stick to Tami’s hair and I wonder why I work so hard for the beauty it brings then spend hours picking them out of her tangled up hair. Dry and dusty here but the pond and bog flowers are blooming their hearts out.
    My laptop is “on the blink” so you are seeing this come through an old WordPress account. The photo is my wife, Shirley, at five years old.

    Love it Judy…your house is looking fantastic, but then I think it has always been fantastic since we started visiting 19 years ago. It is definitely a piece of Mexican Art.
