The Process of Intuition: Fandango’s Provocative Question #88

To what degree have you been able to control the course that your life has taken? Or is being in control of your life just an illusion?

I have lived many different lives in my life and have found that the best path to follow is my intuition. I have changed my entire life because of a dream, or because of a chance meeting with someone who told me of a place I’d never been to where he thought I should be living, or because of a book handed to me by a complete stranger as I was leaving a plane who said, “I think it’s time for you to read this book.” Another time, a woman I didn’t even remember meeting at a Bay Area Women Writer’s convention sent me a book that entirely changed my life. Somehow, when I cease doing what I think I should do and instead follow an inkling of what I want to do, even if it seems illogical, it leads me toward another wonderful choice in life.

For Fandango’s Provocative Question #88.

Yes, sitting on stair steps with a pretty girl at a party, talking about our beliefs, I mentioned the liberal thoughts on religion that I had, and she said: “Oh you are a Unitarian~!” Actually I had never heard of them. But the next Sunday, I went to church with her and found out that she was right, thus changing my thinking the rest of my life. It was there all that time, but I did not realize it~!

However your post was once again running parallel to my early morning thoughts… It started with that photo I posted of my mother petting the dog in front of our house, or rather her house, as I was visiting her at the time. This was my dog Aggie and I had completely put her, and the events surrounding that dog out of my mind for years~! But there was a serious back story to it.

You see I did not jump out of school into my lifetime profession suddenly. I spent about a year in Houston. Working at two other jobs while attending business school at night to pick up typing, business machines, and technical report writing, which gave me another little diploma, but I was not satisfied with where my life was going. The Korean war was on, and I was classified 1-A and though I have a serious hearing problem, I could not get that classification changed. Every three months I had to report, again, to the draft board, where I would go through all the test, always having my hearing test done last. I came to the conclusion that the blood they were drawing each time must be the reason for this, and they were selling it, they just did not believe that there would be a miracle and God heal me of the hearing problem I had sense I was three, it is not like bone spurs, you know~!

So though both of my jobs took advantage of my schooling qualifications, they were primarily in an office, where I was not really happy. I lived in rented rooms, in peoples homes, comfortable but not satisfied.

Back to Aggie. I had a nice little private room with bath in the home of a couple named Simmoneau. A nice couple and Aggie was his dog. Mr Simmoneau had serious diabetes and heart trouble, which was a terrible drag on his life. Aggie was a puppy from the Texas A&M mascot, thus her name. She and I became fast friends.

One day when I came home from work, there were police cars all up and down the street. Starting to go go into my little apartment, I was stopped by the police and put into a car to be questioned, as though I was guilty of a crime. Mrs Simmoneau was there as well, covered in blood from her head to her feet.

From the police and her I got the whole story. Mr & Mrs Simmoneau were going to get some soil for a plant. They had a little tub and went to the car in the garage. She had forgotten something and went back into the house to get it. Within that time, she heard a pistol shot and ran back outside. Mr Simmoneau had shot his self in the head. She must have lost her senses and tried to scoop the blood up and put it into the tub, she also was trying to save his life but it was impossible. So when the ambulance got there he was dead and Mrs Simmoneau was covered in blood…looking like a guilty person. I knew that he had been very despondent and told the police so and why. This kept them from taking her to jail, but she went to her Son’s house for the night… So I was left at the sad busy scene with Aggie and police.

The results is that I found another place to stay in a day of two, but Mrs Simmoneau asked if I would please take Aggie with me, as she now needed a new home…and I was happy to have her.

I have put that scene out of my mind all these years, until I looked at that picture of my mother & Aggie and it all came back to me. I took the picture when I was home for a visit, from a project in the far north of Canada about a year later. You see when I became a “traveling man”, my mother took over the care of Aggie while I was gone.

Isn’t it strange that I completely put all of this out of my mind for so many years, Mr Simmoneau taking his own life because it was no longer worth the pain of living, me actually moving out and quitting the office job I had, because I was not happy, and the whole direction of the rest of my life starting to change within a week, when I went to the newspapers, and found another job in Geophysics, which I was qualified for, and which showed promise of my doing what would make me happy for so many years to come.

So we do not make plans for the future except some preparation following the things that make us happy, but often fate takes over and pushes us, hopefully, in the right direction. Or to put it more crudely, as it was as this scene….., S**t Happens~!

I feel exactly the same way. Some of the worst things that have happened to me have given birth to the best things–like fate or nature or synchronicity having to take severe measures to move us on in life.

So do you think going by your intuition gave you control of your life because you chose to follow it, or were these just random occurrences or encounters outside of yourself that caused your life to follow the path that it did?

The two books pictured and would you believe, I can’t remember the name of the other book? It was about following intuition and I passed it on after I read it. It just bolstered the other two books. But the dream that changed my life is both in my blog and was in Chicken Soup for the Soul, Dreams and the Unexplainable.

Don’t know why that didn’t send as a link. The books are “The Process of Intuition” by Virginia Burden and “Man and His Symbols” by Carl Jung. As a further synchronicity, Virginia Burden later asked me to write a screenplay of her life..I was studying screenwriting at UCLA and she learned from a mutual friend about me. I never did do it as I decided Screenwriting was not for me, but one of those interesting twists of life.

We just worked with Intuition last night in my current Wild Women group. Intuition and Synchronicity. And so, of course I would find this from you today, writing and musing about intuition and synchronicity.
    Thanks, Judy

Ha..It’s been a vital force in my life.. Today I was making spaghetti sauce and wanted to put olives in it. I looked and looked in the fridge, moved everything on every shelf–some twice–and the olives were not there! I gave up and started to close the door and a jar catapulted out of the fridge, slid under my center island and clear over to the other side of the kitchen under the sink overhang and started spilling liquid. I thought it was broken, but picked it up and it was intact, but the lid was loose and so it was leaking profusely. When I picked it up, it was a jar of olives! I swear it was psychokinesis!!! I had looked so carefully everywhere in the fridge that I still don’t know where it came from!!! (Creepy music)
