Thanks to my friend Gloria for this cartoon. I couldn’t resist posting it in spite of the fact that I don’t know the source.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

When I say such things in front of my son’s I usually get an: “oooh Daddddd” and when someone wants to take a photo I pose like Benny Hill~! with one hand down my trousers, this stops them every time.

When I was an easily-embarrassed pre-teen, I would walk as far away from my folks as possible and my dad would hurry and catch up with me and walk funny just to kid me..I’d walk faster and faster and he’d walk funnier and funnier.

My sisters, on the other hand, would wait until I got home from a date with my first boyfriend and when we got to the porch, they would hurriedly turn out the porch light, as though they were doing me a favor in case I was planning a good-night kiss. Of course it looked like I was complicit. They would watch in glee from a crack in the front room drapes. You would have fit right in.

My sister Myra (Mike) and I were only two years apart and were the closest of all siblings. My mother was very strict with the girls, as to get home time. If she was late getting back, she would come scratch on my window screen which faced the porch. I would let her in through my window and she could go to her room without passing my mother who would be listening for the door to open and close, from her to getting home. She ended up marring that boy who was also my age and we are still best friends, even today~! But Mike died early this year leaving me the only one left in the family. Those two raised a great and beautiful family which has grown so large that it is hard to know them all with the descendants. My sisters had a much more strict “love” life than I had; but she worked on me behind the scenes~! (and look how I turned out~!)

How could your mother not catch on when she never saw your sister come home from a date? Once I got home from a date and saw the light on in the living room and my father sitting up in his chair. I was terrified as I was very very late. When I quietly unlocked the door and entered, he didn’t move even though his easy chair was right beside the front door. Turns out that he was sleeping…he had gotten up a bit early to go out to the fields, sat down for a moment and fallen asleep again. I actually got home a bit after he had gotten up to begin his day!!

“Gotten up a bit early~? ! ” Girl you were late and needed to be grounded for a MONTH~!”

No, my mother would go to bed, she did not sit by the door, the fear was that opening the door would awaken her, especially the squeaking screen door,, so we always did the quiet thing.
