Thursday Doors Challenge

This is the door to the restaurant on the end of the Ajijic Pier.  Sadly, it is now closed–both door and restaurant.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Yes, Jesh. My grandfather emigrated from Friesland and my Grandmother’s parents were from around Ede in Holland/Netherlands. Glad you found my blog. Thanks for introducing yourself and inquiring about my lineage! On my mom’s side, Scotch (MacGregor/King) and some more Dutch I believe. Are you Dutch???

Guess what – the last place we lived in Holland (a few decades ago – we lived in Ede – went back there 2 years ago, and so much has changed, from a small town it became a city! Yes, so I am Dutch-Indonesian, came to Holland as a 5 year old (you probably know that Indonesia was at one time a colony of Holl.) – so I think and live like a Dutchman (woman). Have a fab weekend!

I spent quite a bit of time ( a few months) in Indonesia in the early seventies and nineties so know about the Dutch connection. There are still old people there who speak Dutch. It came in handy at least once when we were marooned and none of us spoke Indonesian or Timorese. The Dutch guys traveling in our group were our communicators. I have a story about this if you do a search…A big adventure walking across Timor during the monsoon season. Nice to meet you.

Somewhere I have a list of relatives in Holland, but when I went there, none of them replied so it may be they are all gone now. My Grandmother and Aunt made up the list in the 60’s so there is a good chance none of them reamain or that they’ve moved. It would be fun to try to find relatives there, but I don’t even know any Dykstra relatives in the States! Except for my two sisters.

Oh, too bad. Do you know that Cityhall of each city or town has the address where they moved? Or, on-line you seem to be able to look for people (I’ve never done that, but maybe you can ask someone who is young how to go about that).
I don’t know if ancestry.com also gives addresses.

I was there for a period of time when the city hall was closed. I had wanted to try to see what I could find, but alas. I didn’t go to Ede although I believe the train went through it. I was just in Amsterdam for two nights.
