firecrackerplant, perhaps because they just generally have a very simple shape. The best photo opportunity I ever had (and missed–) Was of a whole row of lipstick blooms bobbing across the terrace–each carried by a worker for the leafcutter ants. I can’t believe that it didn’t occur to me to take a photo. Or perhaps I did and it is stuck on some old hard drive that I’ve forgotten.

I saw it today in a flowershop – for the very first time.

What a coincidence. Was it a cut flower or a plant? Did you buy it?

It was a plant and no, I didn’t buy it. I wondered if the name was an allusion to the colour of the flowers, but now I’ve come to think the shape is supposed to resemble a lipstick? To me they look more like little trumpets. 🙂

At the stage where they are still closed, they look like a tube of lipstick. When they open they do look like trumpets.

I see – I don’t use lipsticks, so I wouldn’t know. 😉 The German common name is shame flower in translation, derived from the Greek original. Doesn’t sound as nice as lipstick, does it?

Because it droops its head, no doubt. The same thing that makes it impossible to photograph.
