Two nights ago I published pictures of what looked to be a huge fire on the mountain below me. Yesterday I went back down to try to find the area to photograph it. I could only locate one spot and this is what I saw:

Strangely enough, it looks like just the dry grass burned and burned so quickly that it left some of the greener bushes and plants. I’ve augmented the color a bit so you can see the burned areas, but the green, even though a bit brighter than it actually is, does nonetheless show the green plants untouched by the fire. The fire extended over a much larger area than this, but this was the only place where a road led close enough to photograph it. It appears that the cross and flags were not burned, so I don’t know what it was that I saw burning that looked like a rope of flags and a cross. Perhaps I had a vision…ha.
Fire is never something to be taken lightly. Yet it also purifies and invigorates the earth. As you probably know, there many species that require fire to re-seed. Cheers Jamie.

Yes..but unfortunately mankind isn’t one of them! This fire got very close to houses. No wonder someone else who was witnessing it packed up valuables and was ready to evacuate. Luckily it was unnecessary.

thank goodness it was not more.

I think your theory is right — the grass burned so hot and fast that it went right over the bushes that had a little more water in them! I do see a couple of trees that burned, too. The fires here that do that often look at night like a whole line of fire, and they often move very fast. I can see why it was so scary, and I’m glad it didn’t get away from those fighting it. Thanks for sharing these pictures!

I don’t believe anyone was fighting it, S. Many times these are burn offs that just get out of hand or a fire caused by sunlight shining on a cast off bottle or piece of glass. There is really no way to get up to this fire other than the end of the street where I was, and there were no sirens. No water supply. They were also setting off fireworks for May 1 so it might have been an accident. We will never know, but I can guarantee it isn’t the first. The air is smoky again today but I have no idea where the fire is. Perhaps we’ll know after dark.

So — it was a classic brush fire. I’ve heard that this is actually good for the soil, or at least the ash is.
We have brush fires here, too. Sometimes pretty big ones towards the end of summer when the woods are dry. I try to be very careful since we are pretty much IN the woods and a fire would be way too close for comfort.

Yes.. We have brush fires, many set on purpose, all over, getting ready for the rainy season. The air has been smoky last few days. This one was just so close and tall that it was scary. The ones on the mountain behind me never scare me.

It’s an amazing world. It seems to be consuming itself with either fire, water, earth quakes or volcanos. Human beings need to be flexible and optimistic to face each of these challenges in a spirit of optimism and hope. Hopefully there will come a quiet time when we can all enjoy beautiful sunsets and sunrises in peace.

No time when all of us can do so at the same time. Natural disasters seem to be sprinkled all over the world, with some spots being rather overspiced.
