Have you ever wondered where the phrase came from? I had an epiphany moment when I was baking cookies a month ago, then forgot about it until I again baked cookies yesterday. It was then that I realized if you place the balls in rows of 3, then 2, then 3, then 2, then 3 on a regular cookie sheet to leave room for expansion, you can fit exactly 13 cookies on the sheet! Voila!! A baker’s dozen!!! I perhaps could have discovered this by looking it up on Google, but much more fun to discover such facts on your own!
Or, for more information, look here: https://judydykstrabrown.com/2016/05/16/the-truth-about-the-bakers-dozen/
Now it makes sense!

See? I learned something. I always thought that it was a bonus for buying a dozen 🙂

I always rationalised that you need an extra in case one broke or was wonky & you’d have to eat it!

I don’t know that I’m correct. It was just a sudden insight and I don’t even want to check to see if I’m right. I’ll pretend it is 1970 and no Google in sight.

It’s more fun this way anyhow! Keeps us spinning stories as we dream up possible explanations!

Nice …! Growing up in London U.K. we used to visit a small bakery every Saturday to buy crispy fresh bread. Mom used to get buns, etc. There was usually the one extra, making the 13. Cheers Jamie.

I always assumed it was because bakers threw in an extra one if you ordered twelve, but your brilliant theory makes more sense, and the baker’s habit may have been a result of the phrase coming into common use.
I have placed thirteen lumps of dough onto a baking tray so many times, but it never occurred to me…

Me, too. I never bake, so it was baking cookies after probably 30 years or more that made me see clearly!!! Some people have a long thought process.

I had a similar aha moment recently the most people had centuries ago. I admit I am slow. I was writing the word breakfast and realize it actually meant to break the night’s fast. I didn’t look it up either because I know I am right.
