to be serenaded by birds,

Watched

Up above us, the birds look down
surveying all within the town.
Impaling bugs, dive-bombing gnats,
pooping on the ladies’ hats.
At outside restaurants, they eye dishes,
and prematurely to my wishes,
long before I’ve finished up,
they swoop down and deign to sup!

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Yes. Here, too. Just had lunch with a little bird today. It kept hopping up on my table, eying the dish of tortilla chips. I finally crushed some and threw them on the ground, and a few birds had interest in them, but that little bird refused to even consider them.

That looks suspiciously like an English –or house — sparrow. Being a “brought over and now a total nuisance” species, I didn’t think English sparrows would have reached Mexico, too, but should have guessed. They are ruthlessly invasive.

Did you know that there was a man who deliberately imported all the birds from Shakespeare’s work who weren’t already in the U.S. to the U.S.?

House sparrows and starlings are two of those varieties that became invasive. This is labeled as “birding lore,” so I guess up to us to decide whether to believe it or not.

Oh, yes, I know about that fellow, or those fellows. We have both sparrows and starlings now, thanks to him/them. Had he only known! And I’ve read about Canada geese being imported to Australia with equally disruptive results. People should leave fauna where they find it!
