This footage of a small boat trying to escape the gas cloud set up by the Stromboli volcanic eruption is terrifying. Forgottenman has just informed me that the people in the boat are safe. Phew. He is the one who sent me this link after I posted the previous one of the volcano erupting. Patti just reminded me that as we passed this volcano two weeks ago it was pointed out to us that it was still active. I think I’m thankful not to have witnessed this event.
The news reports yesterday or the day before indicated that the boat was able to outrun the lava — but they didn’t talk about the hiker who died.

Janet, from ABC News: “There were no reports of victims or damage. Civil protection officials say the situation is under control although they are still keeping hikers off the volcano’s slopes. An earlier unexpected eruption this summer on July 3 killed an Italian hiker who was on the side of the volcano at the time.”

Oh, good — I didn’t realize from the article that the hiker was involved in an earlier eruption! How scary it all must have been, though! Thanks for the clarification!

My heart was in my throat. What an adventure. And I could hear children on the boat.
