“Sacred Spaces” for CFFC Rectangles, Aug 28, 2024

These rectangles are five of a series  of six retablos I created to depict women’s “Sacred Spaces.”  These particular spaces are the Kitchen, the Shops (in this case, an Arts and Crafts Shop,) the Beauty Parlor, Center Stage and Home Sweet Home. ( Actually, if you look closely, the true place depicted is the last frame is “Memory,” for the woman depicted is reviewing old letters, photos and other memorabilia). The sixth one sold before I could get a photograph of it.  It was the Art Studio.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

I love these! In fact, I think it was your retablos that first got me to start following your site years ago! I have been saving wood boxes with the intent to make my own, one of these days! 😉

Nope, and that is what holds me back from starting! I’m used to abstract art, no theme, no plan, but this is different! I need to look around at all “stuff” and see what I have to work with.

You are too kind, I would LOVE your help and insight! If only I could narrow down my ideas, good thing I have a few wood boxes! Some top ideas are Halloween, Dia De Los Muertos, or somehow pay homage to certain suburbs of San Diego, we have so many cool and unique neighborhoods!

Thanks so much Judy! I love the altar idea, and I do have some fun mini props to get me started. I think I have enough knowledge about Dia de los Muertos to give it some symbolism, that’s the beauty of your pieces, I love the stories and meaning behind them!

I totally love your art and I have yours in the best piece of wall I own. I did have to move it to the dining room because people coming up and down the stairs kept shaking it loose. I don’t have anything breakable on that wall anymore. Too much shakin’ goin’ on.
