String Theory
This string you see between the cat
and my stepmother’s witch’s hat
was strung by me to work a spell
to send them both straight back to Hell.
As you can see, the witch has vanished
so more than half the threat is banished.
I think, perhaps, without her
the cat will just curl up and purr.
But ’til I know that this is true,
I’ll wait until it gives a clue
the reason it is naughty’s that
it is, after all, a cat!!
For dVerse Poets Open Link Night # 377 we were to create an ekphrastic poem describing the above painting. .“Where or When (Things Past)” (1948), oil on canvas, by Gertrude Abercrombie. Image from Carnegie Museum of Art and Colby Museum of Art Source

You made the most of this prompt, Judy! Made me chuckle.

Thanks, Eilene. It was a strange one, no? The prompt, I mean. And I admit the poem as well.

Well done…fitting verse to the painting in fun style.

If no reasonable theory exists, make up your own, I always say. And do.

Challenge accepted! I love to use my voice this way, and in my professional life, speak quite a bit. Reading a fun poem is a particular pleasure. I think I’ll record it and repost it on my site, pointing to yours.

Judy, I’m still getting so much mileage out of reading your poem! I was with a group of old friends last night at a “EuroTex” restaurant (yes, that’s right) and poetry came up… I grabbed my phone, found your poem, showed everyone the photo prompt and then read the poem aloud. Laughter abounded! We needed a little lightness after discussing current events, and this poem is THE BOMB for that. Thanks again!

How old are you, Kim? I’m asking because if you like funny poems, I’ve done an adult coloring book with humorous poems about aging and funny photos to color that illustrate the poems. You might enjoy it. If so, I’ll send it to you if you keep sending me your readings of them! Forgottenman loved your recording as well. If you are younger, I’ll have a book of humorous poems coming out later but have a few to get into print before that.

Hi Judy, I’m 61 and going strong, planning on ~40 more years. 😊 I love funny poems and I’m sure I would appreciate – and recognize the truth of – the poems in your coloring books. I’d love to have it and I promise to recite a few! What a lovely trade.
