For Lens Artists Challenge: Behind

Backgrounds add so much to a photo, either by contrast or by adding to the story. Sometimes just by their very blankness, they emphasize the main object. A vivid color may make the foreground object stand out. A pale color may direct ones eye to the object or person being presented.  The background may be an interesting pattern or something going on that builds the mood or plot of the photo. A friend says some of these photos do not belong. If you agree, let me know which ones. It is my feeling that each has an object or being in the foreground, some being farther in the foreground than others. And in all cases, I feel there is an aspect of the background that meets  the before-mentioned criteria.

I can’t for the life of me remember what I had on around my neck and face or why.

I think the first two photos require an explanation. I would have stepped on this strange little creature if my friend hadn’t grabbed my arm and pointed down to it. This is exactly as we found it in the Walmart shopping center. It looked like a little animated dog poop creature trying to escape from a sinkhole! Yes, I did pick it up and bring it home with me. Relax. It was made of rubber. I included a second shot to show you the scale.

These are all photos of  the country around Murdo, South Dakota, where I grew up.  First, Interstate 90 which cut through the edge of the town, and the country just to the west of  town. The third and fourth photos are of the last piece of land my sister and I owned there which we sold a few years ago. It had once contained the last house my parents lived in  there which had since blown away in a tornado. Do these qualify as wide open spaces???
