Conundrum

A conundrum is a kind of riddle based upon some fanciful or fantastic resemblance between things quite unlike. It creates a puzzling question, of which the answer is or involves a pun. Solve this riddle and win a prize. (My admiration.) Try not to look at the comments until you’ve guessed the answer yourself. Then, please brag to me about it in the comments section!

What does not think but has a head?
Has many stories never read?
For each of us, just one, not many.
Contains much heart, yet has not any.
Some say once gone, you can’t go back,
and though one letter it may lack,
with it, if you hit the ball,
you’ll have the finest luck of all.
Add “r” and cover all the bases,
and you’ll bring smiles to many faces.
And when you finally come in free,
you’ll find you have come back to me.

NaPoWriMo 2015, Day 13: Riddle Poem–“Sort of Rhymes with Rimbaud”

The prompt: Write a riddle poem that describes something without ever naming it.

Sort of Rhymes with Rimbaud

If you speak my language, Ndovu is my name;
but in any other country, my name is not the same.
No fair using Google.  Save that for the end.
It’s more fun solving riddles if the rules you don’t bend.
I pack my own big suitcase, my own piano, too.
Once people thought I wasn’t smart, so that’s another clue.
Part of me’s a stocking. It’s what I’m noted for.
And I am also loyal–faithful to the core.
Sometimes I hold umbrellas, though it’s a cruel fate.
People like to look at me  in spite of all my weight.
I’m playful as a baby and a workhorse when I’m older.
Have you solved my riddle or are you getting colder?
If you haven’t guessed by now, I think you’ll never get it.
Why don’t you be my opposite?  Why don’t you just forget it?

Solution to Title: 2-3, 3-17, 6-24, 9-17, 14-5

The solution key: The first letter of the answer to the riddle is the 8th letter of line 1 of the poem. The second  letter is the 17th letter in line 3, etc. Be forewarned that the word hinted at in the title is in Swahili.  How else could I insure you wouldn’t cheat? Okay, now you hate me.

Following Your No’s

It is not fuzzy and is not hot.
(It’s hard describing what it’s not.)
It has no eyeballs but has a mouth.
Cannot go up but prefers south.
When it takes a trip, you go along.
It’s lauded in many a poem and song.
It likes to run but has no feet,
asks no permission to leave its seat.
It has no cheek but is a Tongue.
When it’s a man, it is not young.
It is no planet but is a Moon,
I fear this poem can’t end too soon.
I’m tired of saying what it ain’t.
This negativity makes me faint.
If you don’t know what I’m describing,
it’s a lie that you are not imbibing.
It’s clear that you ‘re not listening–
not noticing that I’m glistening.
How many clues do you need to get?
It’s not just me who is all wet!!
