Trapped

The Prompt: Feeling Fancy—You’re given unlimited funds to plan one day full of any and all luxuries you normally can’t afford. Tell us about your extravagant day with as much detail as possible.

Trapped

Is there something you don’t do that enters dreams and haunts you?
A working woman with no time to write although she wants to?
The widow who would travel far and hasn’t the finances,
but yearns for more adventure—for rare lands and strange romances?

If I were given millions to spend in just one day,
there’s nothing that I really need. I’d give it all away.
Pay for operations for kids hiding in the dark
because of accidents of birth that left their cruel mark.

Send the widow off to sea to see if there’s a chance
to change her life and fill it with adventure and romance.
Let that other woman find out if she’ll write again
if there are no excuses to keep her from her pen.

Perhaps these dreams are only dreams and if given the chance,
these women would discover they aren’t trapped by circumstance.
With obstacles removed, their dreams remain there on their shelves
as they find romance on T.V. instead of in themselves.

Perhaps the child once cured will still remain behind the door,
his habits firmly founded by what has come before.
Some say we cannot really change the world that wants to be,
but with millions of dollars, I’d have the chance to see.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

I love the idea of selflessness! I don’t think I could be THAT selfless, personally. I know there are so many things this “trailer-trash kid” has never seen or done…I am getting there, S-L-O-W-L-Y. So, I know I would HAVE to helicopter in to Machu Piccu or some such extravagance, maybe do dinner at the Taj Majal….So many options! I would definitely want to buy a large area of urban land though- make it into a skate park/ bike park/ community area where kids can go to volunteer, get tutoring that sort of thing. Just that one day window may make that a bit tough. :o)

I know…If there were things I really really wanted that I couldn’t do on my own, I would have been less selfless, but I really do think I’ve been lucky and although there is much I haven’t done, they are all things not tops on my priority list. So…it would be fun to really really influence someone else’s life.

You got me! That writer/artist who doesn’t have the time to create. But, I would if I just simplify my life and make it a priority. The limits are really of my own making.

Beautiful! I have often had a similar thought, I’ve just never expressed it as wonderfully as you have.

The other day I was wondering what the world would be like if every human being on it had a million (prompted by seeing an advert for the lottery, I think), what would happen? How much would it change things in the people-created world? The things which we perceive as trapping us are often not what is actually trapping us, and sometimes the trap is not a trap, and sometimes the trap is the inspiration for creation.

    Thank you for sharing!

Well put. For some reason, I hadn’t seen your comment before. Such a comment is deserving of a reply, so with apologies, I do so now. It is an interesting question. Many would probably squander it and wind up in poverty again. Others with one million would yearn for more and do anything to gain access to the millions around them. Others would truly change their lives. I guess who we are continues to rule, whatever our monetary situation, but I would hope most would use it as an opportunity to build security for themselves and their families.
