About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Judy, I love the girl with the bird on her shoulder. Who is the artist? I don’t remember that one. Is that an acquisition since we moved? Love seeing your walls again1

Hi Allenda. It was one of the few paintings I brought with me to Mexico. It is by a Santa Cruz artist, Anna Oneglia. She is now living in Mendocino. She also did one that was between the two beds in the spare bedroom. This one was over my desk in the bedroom…It is massive. Much larger than any three other paintings on that wall.

Oops..Allenda, I thought you were talking about the big painting of the woman with the bird on her shoulder. Duckie pointed out that you probably meant the drawing. It was done by Ella, the woman who had the booth next to me in Open Studio. I absolutely love it. The detail is incredible. I tried to buy it and she insisted we trade instead, so she got a retablo. In spite of the fact that I had to take another painting down to hang it, I had to have it. I also have a loaner from my friend Steff that I absolutely love. It is a Bedouin woman holding a rooster..I had to hang it from my curtain rod in front of my curtain…A whole new wall to hang!!!! I posted a picture of it in an earlier post.

Yes, Duckie was right. Although I have always admired the fabulous painting by your friend, Anna. The drawing is very compelling. I can see exactly why you had to have it. If I had been there I would have felt the same way and it would be hanging on my wall. I love the haunting mysterious quality in the drawing. Birds as messengers have always “spoken” to me. LOVE this new piece which has found a perfect home.

That is my very last acquisition, Scott. I did an open studio in a friend’s house and this lady was next to me. I couldn’t resist. It is pen and ink and has incredible detail. When I tried to pay her, she insisted on trading for one of my retablos! I love it, too.

I takes such skill and patience..I have neither (at least of the drawing variety.) I will spend months on one retablo, but that is a different sort of patience. The work itself is intuitive and nonplanned, at least in the beginning. Eventually a theme develops and I love seeing what it wants to be about.

There are so many excellent artists here,Barbara, and fourteen years ago the art was a quarter the price that it now is. I no longer have any space on my walls, as you can see, but it is still hard to resist and I have paintings in my closets, in drawers under my beds and, I swear–inside my fireplace!
