If I Had a Hammer
The Prompt: If I Had a Hammer–If you could learn a trade — say carpentry, electrical work, roofing, landscaping, plumbing, flooring, drywall — you name it — what skill(s) would you love to have in your back pocket?
I live in Mexico, where labor is cheap and where everyone needs work, so although there are many of these skills that I already have (given that I used to make lamps and had a husband who thought we should do all our repairs ourselves and never hire a handyman); I am all too happy to call a repairman for almost every job. The exception is rewiring lamps and actually, I’ve also fixed the ice maker–twice! As for the rest, I’m contributing to the Mexican economy. I hire!!

Well, yes. My hub is great at all the tool related stuff so he has that covered. But I do my part to contribute to the economy by paying a cleaning lady. Yes, I do. But I prefer to think of myself as generous rather than lazy.
I’ve been wondering – did you retire to Mexico? (Not to be nosy.)

Yes, Julie..I’ve lived here for 14 years and love it. I have a cleaning lady, too–three times a week. I used to be lucky to have someone wash the windows once a year in the states. I love love having a wife!!! And a gardener who comes three times a week as well, climbs ladders for me and carries boxes. We’ve earned it–and now they are earning it! We’ve been together for almost 14 years and we’ve all become a sort of family to each other. Yolanda tells me what to wear and rearranges my cupboards and plants on my patio. I agree to be their banker and try not to interfere too much with the running of the house and yard. They clean and cut the grass and I write write write write write. I don’t mind nosy, by the way.

Thank you for sharing all that. It sounds like a life I would love. My cleaning lady, BTW, only comes once every two weeks, so I don’t get to be completely lazy. Perhaps some day.

What I pay–top of the line wages here–for one week, ten hours, was what I paid for two hours in the states. That is why I can afford to have someone and now I’m addicted and can never move back to the states again…Sorta like the climate. My mother always said her blood thinned out when she moved to Arizona and it is true…I can’t take cold weather anymore. Oh, Mother, wouldn’t you love surpressing all those “I told you so’s.”

Ha. Sorta put my money where my mouth is? What is wrong…Does it refuse to dispense or refuse to make cubes? Ahem.

Won’t dispense. I have a bin full of cubes and just pluck them off the top. It works for me but guests try to get them thru the chute (yes, I have made sure there are none blocking the way and have thawed the whole mess out several times). It’s not important. Just thought I’d tease a little.

What brand? I had that problem and fixed the dispenser..I’d be willing to come see. If it is a Maytag and has a round coil that turns around on the back of the plastic ice bucket, I might be able to show you what to do. I know you were teasing, but I just may be handier than you think…or I may not be as smart as I think. Even odds.
