It’s become tradition to pin dollar bills to the ceiling of Washoe House—a northern California roadhouse established in 1859. After a burglar broke in and stole a good deal of the money a few years ago and the insurance company put a limit to what they would recompense them, the owner took a rake to the ceiling of the back room and in just a section of it, collected $5,000 to give to charity. Now every so often he “harvests” the ceiling. We stopped there for lunch on our way home from Sea Ranch.

That’s so cool!

Between Gualala and San Rafael. If you look on the menu, I think it gives the name of the Pretty little town it is in.

Aha…It is in Petaluma! I thought it was a separate little town. It is in the outskirts, though. Petaluma is a nice town, as well.

You passed right by my “hood” – I live in San Rafael. I’ve never been to Washoe House. Thanks for the info and recommendation!

Is the Rice Table still open in San Rafael? If so, you’ll see my name on a brass plaque on the entrance wall. My one claim to fame–ha. I had a friend who lived there and we used to visit and take her to the Rice Table, which we all loved. On the grandmother’s birthday, they did a wall where loyal customers could buy a plaque in honor of her and our friend bought us one with our names on it. That grandmother also wrote a wonderful cookbook with Indonesian recipes and stories of her life associated with those recipes. It was entitled “To My Grandchildren.”

Seems it closed in 2006 after 30 years in business, much to the disappointment of its many fans. 😦
