Marilyn Armstrong challenged me to write a poem based on this quotation:
“We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction.”
–General Douglas MacArthur
General Con-fusionIf he advances while retreating,
is throwing up just reverse eating?
Can he freeze ice cubes by unheating?
Is standing up simply unseating?
I didn’t litter. I’m un-neating.
When we press clothes, are we de-pleating?
He left , so are we now un-meeting?
I think you have invented the missing words for which I have long searched!
Un-neating … that’s what the dogs and kids do. “I’m not making a mess mom. I’m just un-neating the house. It’s art!”
Un-meeting is what I want to do with a lot of things. Medical, social, etc. “Excuse me, how does Thursday look for you? We can un-meet at three? I won’t bring the donuts.”
I totally love it 🙂

Must admit it was the hardest poem to write to date. That quote was a corker. For every line I used, I threw at least three away. But, who doesn’t like a challenge? Thanks for playing.

I hope it was worth it. I think MacArthur invented the concept of “advancing to the rear” 😀

My uncle accompanied him to the Phillipines and my Aunt’s friend married the general. She had some good stories to tell.
