Biologist Explains how Marijuana Causes Tumor Cells to Commit Suicide
(NaturalNews) The therapeutic potential of cannabis appears limitless, extending far beyond just relieving nausea or pain in the terminally ill. Christina Sanchez, a molecular biologist from Compultense University in Madrid, Spain, has been studying the molecular activity of cannabinoids for more than 10 years, and during this time she and her colleagues have learned that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, induces tumor cell “suicide” while leaving healthy cells alone.
This amazing discovery was somewhat unexpected, as Sanchez and her team had initially been studying brain cancer cells for the purpose of better understanding how they function. But in the process, they observed that, when exposed to THC, tumoral cells not only ceased to multiply and proliferate but also destroyed themselves, both in lab tests and animal trials. Sanchez first reported on this back in 1998, publishing a paper on the anti-cancer effects of THC in the European biochemistry journal FEBS Letters.
“In the early 1960s, Raphael Mechoulam from the Hebrew University in Israel categorized the main compound in marijuana producing the psychoactive effects that we all know,” explained Sanchez during an interview with Cannabis Planet. “After the discovery of this compound that is called THC, it was pretty obvious that this compound had to be acting on the cells, on our organism, through a molecular mechanism.”

I’ve been following this for awhile and supposedly it’s the resin from the plant that works best for health issues, but big pharmaceutical are trying to block it being available. Here in Canada , larger centers have it available for medical use.

Do we wonder how many other herbal cures have been lost … or never developed … because we don’t believe that herbs have power to do anything but flavor tea?

And because it is in the best interest of pharmaceutical companies to squelch new of them as well as refuse to finance research. Marijuana has been a sort of grassroots (ha) research study started or restarted, rather,by those of our generation. I believe at least one of our founding fathers was a proponent of and grower of hemp–another excellent use of the plant.

I follow all of this stuff as well since I live in Colorado where it has become legal. I never thought there would be a day that people could walk into a store and buy “weed”. But I have also seen, first hand the results for patients with terminal illnesses. It truly is amazing. Thanks You for the share!

As a biotechnology student that fascinates me, but I wonder why is it not a big news yet?
Anyway, marijuana is available in abundance here and commonly used too – not sure if that is legal or not. But, I mean, we do believe in Ayurveda and herbal meds – they are popular here.

Interesting research. It certainly isn’t legal here and I don’t think there is a major movement pushing for it to be legalised but I’m probably wrong and way out of date.

I wish I had earlier known this when my husband was alive. We could have tried to kill his cancer cells with marijuana.

I know I tried to dose my husband when he had pancreatic cancer, but he couldn’t stand to smoke so I made him a stack of marijuana pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. It was one of his last meals, unfortunately. I was just trying to help him deal with the pain. Had no idea it could kill cancer cells.

Here in Holland were actually becoming more strict regarding the use of marihuana. I think, given it’s benefits, it’s not that bad of an idea to see what the potential for people could be when they need to alleviate health issues. It’s insane how much money goes to marketing instead of research.
