Soaring (Addendum to Plummeting)
Soaring (Addendum to Plummeting)
A very close friend just Skyped me that today is the 14th anniversary of Bob’s death and commented on the coincidence that it was my topic today. The fact that I really didn’t remember that today (although I’d thought of it twice in the past week) combined with the fact that today was one of the nicest days I’ve passed in years only goes to show that we come through the very worst experiences but survive and grow happy again and reach new highs. Bob was one of the great loves of my life (during the highs) and one of the greatest sadnesses (during the lows, including his illness and death.) This is how life goes. We all know this. But we need to remember that more highs will come and not give up. Person after person has proven this in their posts today. The last example, since I just read his post, is Mark. For those in the thralls of the lows: just keep strong and have faith that there is another mountain on the horizon. Love to all you strong people and those who feel weak but have a strength they need to remember!!! xoxoox Judy
P.S. Just noticed that we were supposed to tell what we’d learned from our up and down experiences. I learned that we should not put off what we want to do. Bob was so afraid that we would starve or go into bankruptcy if we retired that he put it off far beyond the time when he should have retired. He waited too long! The very hardest thing for me in moving to Mexico alone was all the times I thought, “Damn! Bob would have loved this!” This was the hardest part of the first few years–harder even than my missing him. Don’t wait. Don’t put off your dreams. Do them the minute it is humanly possible to do them. We have control over what we do, but we don’t always have control over what is done to us by other people, fate or life in general. The power we have is to act. Now. Do it!! (I’m talking to myself as well as you.)
If by chance you have my book “Lessons from a Grief Diary: Rebuilding Your Life after the Death of a Loved One” please read Bob’s poem “About My Mountain Poem” in the Appendix. It is a powerful poem about seizing opportunity in spite of the obstacles. He lived this up to the end, but regrettably had a lapse and didn’t remember to live it soon enough.

Plummeting
Plummeting
The weekend before, we had had our last moving sale and had nearly cleared out our very overladen house in California. We’d sold as much of our accumulated lives as possible–a 125 years (sum of our two ages) combined total of collecting art as well as material and tools for making art. We were shedding the detritus of our old lives to begin a new life in the house we had just purchased in Mexico. Our van was fully packed with not one inch of spare space other than a place for our cat and two more suitcases we would add when we finally took off for our retirement in Mexico. We had only one more appointment–to talk to our doctor about the results of Bob’s last physical examination, which had included an ultrasound.
We’d been on a high for months as we prepared to head out for our new dream life, but that dream turned into a nightmare as the doctor announced his verdict. Pancreatic cancer. He told us that Bob had 4 to 9 months to live. He actually lived only 3 more weeks.
(Update: Based on all the comments I’ve received, I have posted an addendum here.)
In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Mountaintops and Valleys.” Describe a time when you quickly switched from feeling at the top of the world to sinking all the way down (or vice versa). Did you learn anything about yourself in the process?
Public Transportation–Peru Style
Public Transportation–Peru Style From the shadow of our plane as we flew over the Nazca lines to our boat on the Amazon or the mini-cabs and even mini-police vehicle, Peru furnished some unique modes of public transportation, not to mention the Cristal truck that accelerated in front of us to get to our destination in time to furnish us a frosty reward for a day hard-spent in tourism!

Heliconia Embrace: Flower of the Day 9/18/15
fragment 701
love Kven’s poetry. It is always original–surprising and beautiful. Today’s I especially like, so I’m sharing it on my blog.
I Feel Good!!!
The mirror that’s in front of me shows very little gut,
and when I look behind me, I can’t even find my butt.
It’s true I am so lithe and slim that I can’t cease my looking,
for self-admiration has replaced the fun of cooking.
Gazing deeply at myself—my mesmerising eyes—
has replaced my fascination with cookies and with pies.
Time spent in the past communing with burgers and fries,
now is spent perusing my waistline and my thighs.
If you want to ask me out to pizza or to pie it,
I cannot follow either plan, in fact I must decry it.
I could not even get a date before this year-long diet,
so if it involves calories, I fear I must deny it.
It’s not that I’m objecting to a bit of her and himming.
It’s just that I prefer activity that is more slimming.
A jog perhaps or calisthenics in the local gym—
something that will keep us both toned and tight and trim?
And afterwards if you should ask me in to have a drink,
the reason that I turn you down is not what you may think.
It’s true that since my bod is fit, I don’t want to abuse it.
The problem is that I’m too tired to ever get to use it!
Top Choice

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “From the Top.” If you had the chance to be reborn, would you choose to return as your present self, or would opt for a fresh start? Tell us about what motivates your choice.
I wrote about this topic some time ago. Here is my final stanza from that poem:
I know that there are others I might envy for awhile
before I slipped into their shoes and limped along a mile,
but I really feel the reason that I’m not already them
is because I am not worthy to even touch their hem.
I’m not good enough to be anyone but me.
Now wait!! Before you think that I am humble as can be,
I have to say that none of them are worthy enough to
slip into my skin or slip one foot into my shoe.
For all of us are unique in one particular way
and I have a feeling you know what I’m going to say.
Each of us is perfect—the best one on the shelf
at simply doing one thing—at being our best self!
