Does Anyone Know What This Bug Is?
It is about an inch long and runs very fast. I took 2 dozen pictures of it and this was the only one that wasn’t blurred! I’ve never seen one before. Looks like it should have wings, but it doesn’t. The answer? It is called a Cow Killer Ant or a Velvet Ant but it is actually a variety of wasp whose female is wingless. It is called a Cow killer Ant because of the saying that its sting is so painful that it could kill a cow!

Termite?

It looks like a termite though I don’t recognize the extact spot pattern. There are SO many termites. They have wings in the spring when they swarm, the rest of the year they eat your house. There’s no place on earth except maybe the antarctic that doesn’t have termites … and I’ll bet if they started building using wood to build things, the termites would come waving banners.

I found out what it was shortly after posting–A cow killer ant, which is actually a female wasp. I know, strange…a bug that isn’t really an ant that really doesn’t kill cows that is named a cow killer ant!

We have thousands of wood termites at a time…They love swarming into my pool and pedaling around, trying to chew off their wings and then using them as flotation devices. Believe I posted pix once.
