The bloom does look a lot like Red Hot Pokers, but the “leaf” is very different. These have the serrated edge, thicker leaf and fleshy juicy interior similar to an aloe vera whereas the Red Hot poker has a very skinny unfleshy leaf. I love the Christmas Candles name–especially since it is so near Xmas! In Mexico they bloom year round, as does almost everything! Thanks, Simret, for viewing and commenting! Don’t mean to be pedantic about the information. I just love to be told what things are so imagine others feel the same, but I know it is irritating to be contradicted, so must tell me off and tell me to hold my tongue if you want to! Merry Xmas. Please come back. Judy

No problem — I’m always glad to learn, and I only recently learned that there’s more than one flower that looks like this — and there are more of them where you are than there are here. Thanks for the lesson, and I apologize for adding inaccurate information to your mix!!

I wish I had $100 for every flower I’ve misidentified on my blog, Simret…And I’ve been so glad when people help me out with the correct information. I appreciate your telling me what you know. Don’t stop.

Such a statuesque bloom. My first time seeing one. I’ve had aloe plants through the years, but nothing as huge as yours and no flowers. Do you harness the medicinal benefits of the juicy interior? I use to use it for burns.

I’m sure you are right. That’s what the candles were for on the Saturnalia trees if I have my pagan facts right! But the bright colors–your addition–makes sense. My need for color is insatiable since I moved to Mexico. I outgaudy the natives!!

I love that, Judy. I have lots of Red Hot Poker-the flower looks the same but yours looks like the base is cactus and my is just green, spider-plant-like folliage. Regardless, they are both gorgeous! [oh, i just read a comment above about that–I’ll leave my comment anyway–appears some flowers look much the same!]

I have one now that is still growing and it’s nine feet high. This is the blooming stock. The plant itself is about 4 feet across. Yes. They get big. The problem here is that things grow so fast that I have to keep cutting them down! I would live in a jungle if I didn’t Well, I do live in sort of a jungle, actually. Feliz Navidad! I may not get posted tomorrow as I’ll be traveling for 16 hours!
