Chameleon Poinsettia: Flower of the Day Challenge Jan. 7, 2016

Chameleon Poinsettia

This pot of poinsettias is right on my deck so I can witness the changes in color from green to yellow to white. I also love that the centers are starting to pop out their little pom poms.  I know Christmas is over, but my poinsettias don’t know it.  Actually, at the market today everyone was buying King’s Cake (Rosca de Reyes) to honor the 12th day of Christmas–January 6–the supposed day the wise men arrived with gifts. Shaped round like a king’s crown, the cake contains a surprise inside–a porcelain or hard plastic effigy of Jesus.

The one who finds it in his cake is the one expected to host the party and make the tamales for Candelaria, on February 2nd.  On this date everyone takes the baby Jesus from his creche, redresses him in new clothing and takes him to the priest to be blessed.  On buses, in the streets and in the subways, people can be seen with babies in arms, taking them for their yearly anointing. If you think Christmas is strung out in the States, you should witness Christmas in Mexico!

Three Kings Day at New Mexico Pueblos welcomes the new Tribal Officials and we went to Santa Ana Pueblo to help celebrate. We can’t take photos at Pueblo Feast Days, and yesterday they had no dances because of the weather – wet and cold. BUT that didn’t stop them from having a “Throw”. I’ll describe this event in a blog. It’s a kind of Christmas giving.

I will love to to read it. Sounds a bit like the cyclic gift tradition in many indigenous communities in both the northwest of the U.S. and in Australia and Africa. There is a similar tradition here in Mexico during one fiesta.

I like flowers and the photography of them. I don;t “do” christmas The whole thing leaves me feeling numb. I was raised in Cof E and went to their schools as a child.. I believe in “love thy neighbour as thyself and do unto others as you would have done unto you”. But, I’m not a Christian. I do meditations and read various books and publications. I enjoy meeting others and swapping stories. So, I’m not anti-social. The lies and myths that surround christianity are mind-boggling. Yeah I understand how the Catholic church has used religion and the requirement of an orderly year, etc. Most people seldom think enough about what is placed before them.

Thank you for the post on the poinsettia. Our Christmas flower has already said goodbye, our house is too hot and dry. Did you know that our Lake Poinsett is named after your poinsettia from down in Mexico? I forgot the story now but it was an early explorer/preacher by that name traveled through here. I just decided you might want to know that very important information.
