Frida Now and Then

DSC07911                                                                     Frida Now and Then

Found this adorable picture of Frida that I took right after I found her trotting down the shoulder of the main road that runs lakeside. The other picture was taken right after the vet said I should put the cone on her. She hyperventilated for hours until I finally had to take it off. Anyone know of something I could put on the sore on her leg to make her stop licking it?  She gets infection after infection in it because she can’t leave it alone.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Hi Judy, i found that spraying it with colloidal silver made a big difference at one point, and because it was a spray i could get it on without touching it and without her knowing i was going to do anything to it … as i found she did not want any attention on it. Darn that the sore is still there.. darn darn darn. i got the silver from the health store that is just beside lakeside ? am i right or am i confused and forgetting what is beside the lakeside grocery… hey. also, if you see a sign up advertising the sale of afghan hounds, could you get me the email or phone number . Still enjoying looking in on your blog.. keep telling myslef to start the dail post, but just to busy at the moment.. trying to plan a trip back to chapala … glad your all well.

I went and bought a bottle of colloidal silver today. Expensive at 450 pesos, but worth it if it works. Just waiting for Frida to fall asleep to spritz her for a third time and examine the wound. Thanks for reminding me about it.

I just got caught up on your Xmas and after adventures with Grandma, Grampa and Mom! I hadn’t seen anything from you for so long, but must be I was busy and your posts got buried in the reader. There is one pic of Boeta and his mom that I just love but too sleepy to go back and find exactly which one. Happy New Year.

Sweet girl. Am I right in remembering that she had a collar that she had to wear once a long time ago, or was that possibly Diego? I seem to remember one of them having a collar on at one point. When Pabu had a hot spot once when Ron was babysitting her, the vet gave him an ointment, I think it was some kind of an antibiotic, which she had to have for about a week. When we came home we only had to apply it for a couple of more days, and she was fine. It did the trick. Hope Frida is feeling better soon.

I asked and he said there was nothing–she’d just lick it off. But, I try to put Neosporin on it and she just licks it off! Wouldn’t you think they could make something that tasted so bad that she wouldn’t lick it?

I thought of organic substances that you could use to get her to leave the area alone….here’s one link that had several suggestions…the last comment was the most interesting though…I never thought of coconut oil…it sounds like it would absorb enough to help, even if she liked the taste and licked at it. Someone else there suggested something called “Lick Guard” which apparently tastes foul to dogs… Good luck. Poor Frida! 😦

What works for me when I have a cut, is capsicum. I have a bottle of the essence in my medicine cabinet. After the initial little jolt, it is both soothing and quick acting. Kills those germs in a snap and promotes healing.. Maybe applied under on some gauze under one of those elasticating bandages? After a lifetime of keeping dogs, it’s now ten years since my Bandit died. So, whether that would benefit yours? Works great on people and scars are a thing forgotten. Where you would find that in Mexico? Cheers Jamie.

Green pepper in Mexico? I hope so. I was thinking if I put red pepper on it perhaps she wouldnt’ lick it, but man, would that hurt. I’ve had so many good suggestions. Gonna try them all. Who needs Google when they have blogger friends????

Nope … red hot chile pepper essence. Normally it does not hurt. I’ve felt it sting for just a moment. Then it’s gone. http://ca.iherb.com/cayenne-pepper-capsicum?gclid=Cj0KEQiA5dK0BRCr49qDzILe74UBEiQA_6gA-vBYai6cfYMcRwQ5xjFWnrj99xg1hQkAav4FRIdFEgEaAgYc8P8HAQ#p=1
That was one hit from plenty.

The one I’ve been using is Ebesse Zozo Cayenne tincture. He lives in Nelson B.C.. It’s possible you would find it in the Nelson Food Co-op’s Health and Beauty section? Whether they sell it online? Is beyond me. I once sat on that Board for 9 years. Now it’s in my past. Cheers Jamie.

Thanks so much, Jamie. I live in Mexico and it’s not so easy to order from the internet here. I’m trying colloidal silver and the new neck contraption I devised. If this doesn’t work, I’ll see if they will send the red hot chile pepper essence to Mexico. I want something that is not pleasant to taste in case the brace doesn’t work. under pressure because I leave in three days. Yikes. You were so generous to share all this information. Thanks so much.

lifelessons, it’s why i hesitated writing about it. Yet Mexico, surely grows some of the finest Chilies in the world? Most of them bought here in B.C. are from there. If the silver does not work? Then perhaps, bind a chili split and seeded around the affected part. On the plus side. Most dog spit is antiseptic. So apart from the gnawing, which makes it worse. She is also trying to heal herself. Cheers Jamie.

I thought so also, but the vet says she is constantly reinfecting herself. She has had 2 penicillin shots and one 10 day course of antibiotics and is 3 days into the next 10 day course. I had read such bad things about surgery to remove anal glands but he claims it is because the surgeons didn’t do it right and that they are very careful and have never had a dog experience incontinence afterwards once the swelling went down. If I can’t figure out some way to stop the cycle, I’ll have to resort to that but want to try everything possible first and I will look for the “cure” you suggest tomorrow in the natural food store. I do appreciate your vigilance in helping me to find a solution!
