Do you see the hundreds of starlings lined up on the wires trying to figure out which way to go?

I do, too. Used to take a walk every night along the lake and watch tens of thousands of black birds lift from the cattails along the lake to form tornadoes of birds..funnels that stretched for miles. Is was spectacular. Then the water rose, destroying all the cattails, and the birds moved elsewhere.

There’s a murder of crows that live in a tree across the road from me. Every once in a while something disturbs them and they ALL fly off at once! Your imagery of the blackbirds is similar — and perfect! Sorry the birds had to move elsewhere!

There are some pretty funny names for groups of animals — but a murder of crows is one of the funnier ones — somehow it’s perfect when they all get going at once! Somebody had a brilliant idea of what to call them!

Yes.. I did some research and they have two possible derivations. One was the crows that would gather over battlefields to eat the corpses. Yech. The other was a very old belief that when a crow committed an offense, other crows would congregate and peck him to death. Either way, not a pleasant prospect.
