Insomnia
I’m lying awake when I should be snoring,
but falling asleep is simply too boring.
Lying here quiet with nothing to do
with nothing to listen to, nothing to view
just makes me restless, unable to snooze.
I need some amusement, a snifter of booze—
something to make me forget to recall
that falling asleep’s not the end of it all.
I cannot help but resent this time wasted
when things could be written or looked at or tasted
instead of just lying inert in my bed
with my eyes shut but images filling my head
that tend to confuse and to fill and encumber
this time that good sense says should be spent in slumber.
Very nicely penned. I also go through such moments at times and it’s really irritating especially the feeling that you are wasting your time!

You are the first person I’ve ever talked to who admitted to that same feeling!

It’s nothing to be ashamed of I believe:)

I felt that way in my young adult years – frequently swore that I’d “sleep when I’m dead!.” Only once I started studying it did I realize that sleep is not at ALL a “passive” state. Our brains do a lot for us when “we” are sleeping, not competing with what we mistakenly believe are more “active” states.
Still, I have friends who ADORE sleep, and doubt I’ll ever be one of those (even though I know longer resent the time spent sleeping).

Much as I know it is necessary, I still put it off for as long as possible.

As a person with bipolar, I can relate to insomnia. I used to write, too, when up late at night. And eat. I also used to bake, especially muffins. A few times I even drove around area, but hubby would wake up and see me gone and get frightened. I had to stop that.

I think I just hate to waste time sleeping, but I also think it just gives me a space of time to think about things I don’t want to think about. Thus, I try to stay busy right up to the moment of sleep.

I wind up writing something. I simply cannot just LIE there. Anyway, I’m more likely to fall asleep listening to a book or with my fingers on the keys 🙂

I can RARELY sleep before 2-4 AM, and that’s my best time for writing too, Judy — but I also stay asleep for 8 hours once I do finally drift off.

I dislike having to waste valuable time sleeping – that’s why I’m usually still up at 3 am!

Biggest satisfaction a writer could have is to have someone make that statement. Thanks……
