“Wanted” (NaPoWriMo day 19)

So, I was awakened at 4:30 a.m. by Annie the cat’s incessant yowls to be fed. She’s an old girl and getting crabbier by the day at the same rate that her voice gets shriller and louder! I finally gave up and took the long cold walk to the kitchen to get her bowl, food and water and came back to my bedroom and shut the door as I didn’t want to awaken my houseguest. With Annie quieted, I checked my blog to find a message from Forgottenman, who had not yet gone to bed! In the message, he mentioned going back over old blogs of mine and finding this want ad poem and his reply that he had totally forgotten. This was one of my first entries in my blog five years ago, so I had forgotten it as well. Even the four people who read and liked it at that time have long vanished into the quagmire of past bloggers, so thought I’d share it with you. The meter isn’t even, but isn’t intended to be, and the information is pretty much the same as it would be if I wrote a want ad today. Pretty telling. It’s 4:58 now. I think I’m up for the count. Good morning. Is anyone out there awake as well?

“Wanted” (NaPoWriMo day 19)

The prompt was to write a poem in the style of a personal ad.

It’s not so hard to write a personal ad.
Wanted: someone to replace my dad

who consents to cut the carrots and grate the cheese
Just exactly as I please.

A quirky, pleasant, intelligent, liberal man
who can navigate a day without a plan;

who will throw the dog a bone
and let me be alone

sometimes. At other times, who’ll draw me out.
Someone who doesn’t even want to shout.

Someone who will make me want to be

I’m old and gray – you’d see if I stop shaving my head.
Cutting carrots is no chore, nor the grating.
(Wait – is “grate the cheese” some kinda euphemism?
I don’t always understand these things these days.)
Quirks aplenty. Pleasant, too. Smart? Won’t toot my horn.
    (No euphemism there.)
Me? Plans? Utterly rudderless here, My newfound Dear.
You go off, do your Thing. The dogs & I, we’ll find something
to do or throw or wrest to pass a happy time, until you’re back and ready.
No shouting I, more a shusher.
We’re We. We have no choice.
But you knew that, know that, don’t you?

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.
