Melancholy

Melancholy

The campfire collapses into a plaintive rune,
echoing the plangent wolf call of a loon
that floats the silver pathway of the water-jellied moon.

I face our final parting. As I hear its taunting croon,
the humid night surrounds me in its tight cocoon.
Life is a cruel comedy whose laughter ebbs too soon.

The rune “pertho” designates secrets and chance. It’s sign is water.

Prompt words are plangent, anyway, comedy and river. Here are links:

You made my day! I haven’t studied runes — what a tragic gap, what a wonderful opening! I love it when your poems lead me down an online rabbit hole. Thanks for a gorgeous poem!

What a wonderful comment, Victoria. I had a friend who used to make and read runes. I still have a bag of beautifully carved stones somewhere. Perhaps I need to look for them.

It is always encouraging when a comment comes through that demonstrates that someone has read closely and discerned exactly what I meant to convey. That’s the reward, other than the writing itself.
