Immodest Proposal
The busy restaurant suddenly as silent as a tomb—
my “No” resounding clearly all across the room.
It was this blunt refusal that brought him to his knees,
begging my forgiveness and finally saying “Please!”
Tenderness exuding from his every word,
he repeated his offer in a manner less absurd.
His sangfroid left behind him, he presented me the ring
with proper reverence as though it was a sacred thing.
It was a better proposal than the first one he had pitched
when he tossed the ring box at me and said, “Wanna get hitched?”
Prompt words today are sangfroid, instead, tenderness and lapse.
Love this one🤠

I had to laugh at your last lines. Was he from Sask perchance?
I so often read these down-on-one-knee scenes, but our fellows here haven’t heard of such silliness. At my sister’s funeral we were told how B, visiting a month after they met, said, “There’s something on the kitchen table for you.” She went into the kitchen and saw the box on the table and promptly shrieked, “YES!”
So, not quite like your last line, but close. 🙂

My husband’s proposal was barely more romantic. For some reason, we were in a Starbuck’s in Hollywood, even though he llived in Saugus..an hour north of L.A. and I lived in West L.A. He just said something like, “I’m wondering if we should get married.” I said yes. No ring. Later we found the rings in a jewelry store. They were custom rings someone else had ordered and rejected..but we liked them. Not so romantic, all-in-all.

I don’t really “get” the public proposals either, Christine. Especially in front of family and friends. It seems sorta showy and a bit pressured. Nothing wrong with a bit of romance, however.

My husband’s company moved him to Manitoba. When he told me the news, I said, “What about us?” and he said, “I guess we should get married.” So there you have it. If a fellow hasn’t been romantic before the proposal, a fancy deal won’t get the best results, either. You’d definitely feel pressured, though.

All these years and I’ve never heard how Bob “kind of” proposed before. I wonder how many other stories we haven’t shared?

I don’t know how Jim proposed, either.

This was a fun poem, well done, Judy. Although I never experienced love. If I got to propose I’d never do it so publicly I feel it unfair to pressure the lady that way. I certainly wouldn’t say ‘lets get hitched’ lol
