I have a terrible time telling lavender from Salvia..Unless I can smell it.

I knew that’s not lavender. But salvia has square stems like sage, and lavender has round stems. The smell also is a good clue! I guess I could have looked a little closer to see the square stems in this photo!

I think there might be another clue — I think that the leaves of the salvia family may also smell like sage. But the square stems are unique and easily identifiable!
