“A Year Ago Today,” For Flashback Friday
This was one of my posts made exactly one year ago today:
Anima/Animus
Click on photos to enlarge. Explanations of the sculpture are given below the poem.
Anima/Animus
The sword of guilt is something I continually hone,
and in this I feel that I am surely not alone.
Guile and temper are not exclusively my sin,
for animus is something that we all carry within.
In the early nineteenth century, animus was used to mean “temper” and was typically used in a hostile sense. In 1923, it began being used as a term in Jungian psychology to describe the masculine side of women. The anima as the unconscious feminine side of a man. (Excerpts from Wikipedia)
The photos are of my mixed media sculpture entitled Anima/Animus. The detail in the second photo symbolizes the shattering of the male side of the ego by a feminine consciousness. The metal object in the glass case is a small replica of the instrument used to sever heads from bodies in sacrificial preHispanic temple ceremonies. The hammer shattering the glass is meant to symbolize the gentling effect of the feminine on the masculine.
Prompt words today are animus, guilt, guile, exclusive and alon

Little Duck (for 99 Word Story)
Little Duck can’t believe it any more than I can. Out of eight socks taken out of the dryer, six of them are mismatched—which means each of them matches none of the others! You may think some look like they match, but none of them remotely do. If they are the same length, one is heavy and the other see-through. I cannot figure it out as I have even purchased two new pairs of black socks since I left Mexico. Mismatched socks are a Bummer!!! We may have to go buy me some new ones to console ourselves.
I think I’m too late to submit to this 99-word challenge, but here are some other Duckie stories from folks who discovered the challenge on time: https://carrotranch.com/blog/

Humble Petunias for FOTD
Not my favorite flower, but they make a vivid display against the turquoise wall.

Petunia: for FOTD July 26, 2023
The popular name for this flower is “Seaside Petunia.” Ironic, because I photographed it in Sheridan, Wyoming. Looks like something has been chewing on the bottom flower. Rabbits, perhaps? There is always one in the yard there.
I decided to research the matter, and this is what I discovered:
“Fortunately, petunias are a totally safe food for rabbits, and most rabbits absolutely love them and will eat them by the handful. Rabbits tend to be keen on eating flowers, so if you let your bunny roam free in your garden, be aware that it is likely to nibble at least a few of the pretty petals.” HERE is the source for this information.

“Words” for W3 65
Words
By their adjustment,
I change their drift,
but when I alter their lilt,
I am as transformed by them
as they are by me.
I am inebriated by words.
I reel in their power
as they call my bluff.
They reflect the changes in me
I would otherwise not know.
I can float in their buoyant comfort
or shoot the rapids of emotion.
Words are my river and my raft,
my cushion and that daredevil conveyance
into a new stream of thought
from which I never return
to the exact same world
I left from.
Why Do We Write?
We write to share that part of us that might not otherwise be shared. The page is like a Fibber Magee and Molly closet where we store all those leftover parts of ourselves. Open the page and everything comes spilling out: organized, disorganized, jovial, sad, rational or irrational. Everything gets crammed into the page. We may not be lionized for it. Our words may be stolen and presented as someone else’s, but the important thing is to write them. Words are like a pressure valve, freeing pent-up emotions. They furnish a release that is somehow part of the solution to the problems they describe.
