Light on Water
Early to bed,
this sleepy-
head me
was asleep
at nine thirty
to wake up
at three,
a cramp
in my leg
between
ankle
and knee.
So I left
my soft bed
to go out
to stew
in a steaming
hot tub
in the
night sky’s
full view,
looked up
at the sky
and could see
only two
objects
so brilliant,
they lit up
the sky.
Bright light
against black,
so vivid
and high,
with no
other stars
to compete
for my eye.
The Moon
a bright disc
that lit up
the night,
and a planet
or star
that was
equally bright,
piercing
the darkness
with heavenly
light.
Jupiter
As small as a raisin,
as bright as the moon,
over mountain and ocean
and meadow and dune,
it’s a midnight sonata
minus a tune.
True story.
The duet of a full moon and bright Jupiter, the only other object in the sky, was magical.

So beautiful! Must be worth getting up at night

Ultimately, it was, but that leg cramp was a killer and although it lessened, was still there after a half hour in the hot water.

I get those too. A friend gave me a tip; Take a few grains of salt and the cramp goes away. It seems to work.

I used to keep a bottle of tonic on my night stand but it seems to me that the cramps come on nights I’ve had a gin and tonic!

Alcohol is dehydrating so that could be the cause

Maybe, but one drink shouldn’t do it!

Can’t say but try the salt trick. It works for me because I get the most agonizing cramps at night too.

I’ve always been a night person. Even as a little girl.

Gorgeous and natural rhyming. It’s amazing how you do this. I felt the night sky you described so well.

I have spent so much of my life writing, Ann. It’s like breathing. Wish we lived closer so we could write together!! (In the same group, I mean. I have a small group that meets at my house, a larger group that meets twice a month and another that goes on a retreat with each other once a year. And the blog. Lots of incentive.)

O my. You have constant motivation from other writers. I’m glad ours meets only once a month as I have a hard time keeping up with it. It boils down to 10 pages of sharable work a month. I’m writing a new novel. As usual. And sometimes we have about 70 pages of new material from others to mark each month . I have to go to bed so damned early now that I wouldn’t have t8me for much more. Swim 3 times a week, attend many doctor appts, and read when I can. Best book in 20 years is cloud cuckoo land. Devoured every page.
