I spotted this hibiscus through the open wall in the garage as I got out of the car, but when I went to take its photo, I found that the leaf cutter ants had gotten to it before I did!

I hope you can get rid of the ants

They are a yearly problem. We scatter pellets or they would eat every leaf and flower.

Gorgeous. The first time I was there in ’73, there were no cars or hotels. We stayed in losmens–in people’s homes. And just small restaurants. Poppy had her first tiny restaurant that was lit by candlelight at night along the paths. I believe that has now led to a string of highrise hotels! And when I was in Kuta Beach in ’96 there was so much traffic that it was hard to cross the road. We stayed at Nick’s Pension right by the river a block or two from the monkey forest. I wonder if it is still there? (Nick’s, I mean. I’m sure the monkey forest is.) We could sit on our front porch and watch the processions come down to the river to bring ashes to scatter and the young men would climb the tall trees outside our room to pick coconuts and papayas. Idyllic.

In the name of progress, things change a lot, and not always for better.

Finally a photo with a reference to give me an idea of size, and that thing (half of thing) is huge, but the leaf cutter ants got your thumb~!

Well, the flower is in front of my hand so looks especially large but they are big!

Yikes — do they really eat the flower that quickly?

They eat whole bushes in a night or two… Some go aloft and chew, others wait down below and collect the pieces and carry them to their underground nest.

At that rate, they could decimate your entire garden very quickly!

Yes and they have in the past
