Okay.. three diferent folks identified this flower which I originally labelled as a “Mystery Flower.” Here is what it says about it online: Mexican prickly poppy (Argemone mexicana), also known as goatweed, Mexican thistle, prickly poppy, and yellow thistle, is a member of the poppy family
It is definitely a thistle species. I agree, it’s a really beautiful one.

There were some wild poppies with similar leaves growing in the chaparral in San Diego. They had big white flowers.

Plant looks like a Mexican Poppy, but though the flower looks close in color I have never seen the petals that wide open. We have a similar plant here but the flowers are white. Could be hybridized~?
