Interlopers, For NaPoWriMo 2024, Day 16

Interlopers

The little dog sleeps nestled.
No elbow room, even though
just two of us in this big bed.
A truck’s roar  from the road
a mile away. Last night’s near
partiers now gone to bed, but
at 5 AM, the strains of music
from below, Sounds lifting up the mountains
like clouds to float above my bed.
For 15 years, I surrendered
my side of the bed to you.
23 years after, I still
sleep on
the

                                                   other side.

      Thanks, Derrick. All true.

Thanks, Stephanie. Sometimes a poem just naturally falls into an appropriate shape, just needing a bit of adjustment to nudge it into shape. That’s why I like to center my poems… not a popular choice according to modern custom, but because they are my own, I can do as I wish!!! ;o)

This could have been expressed by me, Thanks, Sometimes two, one on the assigned space and the other in a narrow place often almost sliding off the bed, a cat and a dog, both claiming me as their natural zone. Often a hand on each as we sleep, but memories of another time and space.

    Bittersweet memories, thanks, Judy…..

I know. Not always the most convenient positions, but I love having something in bed with me. Coco usually sleeps on the pillow right next to my head. Zoe used to sleep on my legs but they would fall asleep, so sometimes she is by my side hip to knee, sometimes jumps down and sleeps in her bed on the floor near the foot of my bed. Poor Morrie in his cushy bed in the doggie domain–an addition to my house built just to accomodate Frida, Diego and Morrie..complete with their own fridge!!

Until a month or so back I had three. I have a blanket chest at the foot of my bed with a soft blanket on the top of it. Eppie would start her night off there. Coco would be at my feet, and Tami at my hip just where my hand would reach her head. Now if they were really tired and did not want to be bothered they might all disappear.

But something happened to Coco and she is no longer with me after about 11 years. She was a very large cat, actually larger than Tami, and must have been keeping the other two in line because when she disappeared, all positions changed. Eppie now is at my left hand at my hip and Tami is a mirror image on my right. BUT if Tami does not want to be bothered she moves on down to my feet.

I never had any of my animals sleep near my face but they always know when I wake up and come up to greet me in the morning. Tami starts at my legs and walks up my body with her little head on my chest wanting to get a good morning loving. I hug her and let out a little moan of pleasure. She replies with her imitation of the moan but it comes out as a low growl. She also shows me where to scratch with her paw slightly scratching the right spot. At the same time, Eppie is also beside me wanting me to use my other hand to scratch her.

The interesting thing is when I get up to go into the kitchen for coffee, as I pass the coffee table, Eppie will have beat me there and will be on the coffee table in that flat mode of wanting more scratching. I call this her segunda.

They do make our lives happy and show pleasure and love in a meaningful way.
