Memory Aid

Memory Aid

When lethologica rears its ugly head,
I give up and go to bed,
for when my conscious mind won’t stream it,
my response is—try to dream it.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

I noticed this when you posted it on facebook a couple days ago. Later that night, in bed after a couple rums, it flitted across my mind again. But I couldn’t remember the word “lethologica”, only its meaning. AND in my rum-induced sleepy haze it did NOT occur to me that I was experiencing exactly what I was trying to remember! True story.

Once again I learn something from your blog. Ow. 🙂 As someone who gets “brain fog” a lot, plus getting older, the tip-of-the-tongue phenomena has been increasing. I’ve been calling it aphasia. Upon reading this post I looked up lethologica and if you Google that followed by “vs aphasia” you get some really interesting (to my geek self anyway) reading and even more words for this experience! Who knew?

Good advice, I have a terrible case of lethologica. Ask me who is that great doctor you went to yesterday for your foot. Bzzzzzt, my mind goes blank. Try to write a poem and know the rhyming word that goes in a line. ZERO. but it will come back during the night maybe at three or four in the morning. If I don’t get up and write it down. The whole damn poem goes into my “good thing to write about ” file. Loved the little poem and the big advice~! Thanks.

BTW Do you also have things where you have written something and filled a gap word with XXXX to come back to later when your memory is renewed? I will be asked about the name of a town, a person, or even an object and suddenly my mind goes blank. I will then call the person next day and give them the full information.

Like the man at a party ask the question “what is the flower that smells so nice, and has thorns on it stem”. Someone answers, Rose. He says yes that is the one, and calls out to his wife, “Rose I have something to ask you~!

Maybe that is why I call myself SAM~!

Ha.. Love that joke. I never have any trouble writing…just in life. A couple of months ago, I forgot the name for pineapple!!!! And a whole group of us couldn’t remember Tom Hanks’ name. Who doesn’t remember Tom Hanks???

This is charming, Judy. My two friends here have problems with this. When I was dealing with long Covid, I did, too. One day we were at lunch and I warned them, “I don’t have the words right now.” We all laughed.
