I Took A Picture Of Your Name.
After so many years, seeing it again on the screen,
I took a picture of your name.
Not written by your hand,
it had a strangeness––
featureless, revealing nothing.
It had no voice,
no breath.
Out there sharing itself with the world,
it has formed a wall around
that intimacy it birthed when you took my hand in yours,
using your name to pull me closer,
powerless against its strength on your tongue.
Everyone wanted to share a part of what made you you,
but I only wanted to be with you, back when,
scrawled in your careless hand,
you were written on my soul.
Wanting to be perfect for you,
remembering that tattoo you traced across my back.
Your name and mine.
“Always,” you wrote.

Oh, don’t feel sad, Lisa. The best loves sometimes cause the most pain..through their loss. But that doesn’t negate their earlier pleasures.

A great poem, Judy. Sad but true for many it seems. I loved this line…
scrawled in your careless hand,
you were written on my soul.

Yes the prompt seemed directed toward love poems and I just happen to have a new book of love poems coming out within the next couple of months so I had plenty of fodder.

This is such a beautiful, poignant poem, Judy, it made me quite tearful. I especially love these lines:
‘…I only wanted to be with you, back when,
scrawled in your careless hand,
you were written on my soul.’

Thanks, Kim. This is one poem in my book I hope will be out in two months..50 years of love poems. As you might imagine, they have roused a few tears in me, too, in the two years I’ve been compiling them and trying to get the book together. (Written over a 50 year period.)
