Apologies from a Sane American

I am borrowing this image from a Facebook friend because it accurately depicts what I have been feeling ever since Donald Trump was unleashed upon the world. How the majority of citizens of a country could be so misled is hard to imagine but it seems to happen again and again.

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

More people didn’t vote at all than vote for either candidate. I’m basically at the “fuck it” point. I don’t know if I’ll stay here, but seriously? IMO that’s a huge problem.

I have no idea why I didn’t see this coming. We really WERE warned but somehow, we believed that the zeitgeist of our country would prevail. But you know, it have NEVER prevailed. Washington didn’t leave office because he through 3 terms were too many. The press du jour drove him bonkers and he couldn’t escape fast enough — and that was Geo. Washington, so basically we’ve been a very obstreperous, frequently dysfunctional country from the very start. This is not to say that other nations have not gone kerflooey too and not all that long ago. Maybe this is just OUR turn to make a mess of the world as others have before us.

I don’t even know why I though this couldn’t possibly happen since it has already happed at least three (four?) times before. The difference now? Technology. More people know what’s going on (or THINK they know, which is even worse) than ever before. It used to take days for word to travel. Now it’s instant and everywhere. Right, wrong, indifferent … the word is out before anyone knows what it means, might mean, etc. We have had nationalist presidents before. Many of them. But like you I was raised in a post WWII America, possibly the longest and smoothest piece of our history — and that was because we were white and more than a little lucky.

I’m so frustrated by this mess. I somehow thought we had outgrown the craziness and moved into calmer waters. Why did I think that? History shows humankind constantly going to war, being at war, settling that war while getting ready for the next one.

Is it just a human thing? That we simply can’t stop the slaughter either in war OR in peace? I’m pretty sure we have been entirely at peace since Korea I just wish the world hadn’t started to crumble while I’m here. If it had just waited awhile, I could have missed it.

How awful is it when you read something like this and you think it might be true? When jokes sound entirely reasonable, you know your country is going to hell in a handmade basket.

The comment is mine. The link is to Borowitz whose column you would probably enjoy. Sometimes, he forgets to be funny, but he is one of the rare people who has clung to a sense of humor when there rarely seems much that is funny.

And somehow, I left out critical words in my sentences — the word NOT got lost in my whirly twirly brain. I hope you read through my typos. Now that would be useful: adding a 10 second period during which you could correct comment errors? I mean OTHER places do it, so why can’t WP? Thanks again!
