Awesome
There was a time when awesome really meant ”inspiring awe”—
events like the moon landing that made one drop one’s jaw,
sights of numbing beauty or achievements of great skill,
art pieces by the masters or achievements of great will.
Yosemite is awesome and so is Everest.
Those climbing it are “awesome.” I admit they are the best.
But today the word has fallen into widespread use—
ubiquitous right to the point where it’s become abuse.
Rap music is awesome, as is that way-cool blouse.
You drive an awesome car and live inside an awesome house.
My neighbor’s beau is awesome. So are her dog and cat.
Her garden blooms are awesome, like her new purse and hat.
You might have guessed by now that awesome’s not my favorite word.
I think the overuse of it is frankly quite absurd.
This pizza is not awesome, though you may find me petty
for saying it is merely good, and so is the spaghetti.
Your child is lovely, so’s your dress, your silverware and smile.
But none of them are awesome—that word brings up my bile.
Please use some other word for it—some adjectival jaw full.
Because in my opinion, using awesome’s simply awwful!!
Not Awesome
Since the SOCS prompt is awe/aww! I believe it justifies running this poem by you one more time.

I’m the one guilty of abusing this word. A very lovely poem Judy.

Well, Sadje, you use so many other complimentary descriptive words that I think you are justified in using an occasional awesome!!

Thanks, willow. That sunrise shot is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken. And I must say it is one of the very few sunrises I’ve seen since moving to Mexico 24 years ago as my house faces west and the east is obscured by trees and mountains. On this day I was driving into town for some reason at a very early hour and must admit I took this while driving! Shhh don’t tell. It was so early, there were practically no other cars on the road. And those are, I must admit, some of my favorite socks. Rest assured I don’t wear them together.

Thats a relief about the socks!!! Don’t worry the secret of your glorious sunrise is safe with me as it is such a beautiful one.

Ha! I still use that word, but hopefully not too much. I think the word today is “fire” if you love an outfit or car or something cool. Is “cool” overused too? I don’t know because I’m too old to be in touch with current “hip” words.
I’m going to stop now before I move onto “gnarly” and “groovy” and you ban me forever for commenting on your “awesome” posts 😉

I must admit, I used “cool” and I’m so out of it, I had never heard “fire” used in any context other than panic…and must say I forgive you for considering my poetry awesome if it is a sincere usage of the word. How could I chide you for it?

It is just so funny how relatable your post is! Words often get overused for long periods of time.

It’s become a handy generic, a convenient standby …this is not necessarily a good thing! I use it sometimes, mustn’t let it become a habit…

I must be the only person in the U.S., at least, who has never used it! Even when called for.

It may be but luckily it doesn’t irritate me..I am just flattered that you would use it to describe my poem! Must admit I use it a lot as well..but sincerely so.
