Phone History for Cellpic Sunday, Aug 10, 2025

This photo was obviously not taken by a cellphone or digital camera, but I couldn’t resist, given John’s photo of a working payphone!!!

Remember when your only phone was in the kitchen and at least one other house shared your party line? This is me, circa 1952, talking on the phone to Lynnie Brost after my mom had washed my hair in the kitchen sink.

I remember one phone in our house, in a little cubby in the wall between the kitchen and living room. I never got an extension in my bedroom, much as I thought I needed one as a teenager. >grin<

It was a long time until we had a phone, I was then already 12 years old. We had it in the corriodor as dad was a bit hard of hearing so when the telephone rang everone heard it, although we had to descend the stairs to get to it.

Fun photo! I do remember those days, hair washing in the kitchen sink, telephone, cord not long enough, party lines. To get any privacy on a call I’d have to get in the pantry and close the door. haha 🙂

My mother always had me lie on the kitchen counter with my feet near where the phone was and my head in the kitchen sink to wash my hair. We had only a bathtub in the bathroom..no shower…so when I got older, I continued to wash my own hair in the kitchen sink…standing up once I was old enough to reach.
