I took this lovely little oriole away from the cat thinking it was still alive, but ten minutes later, I haven’t been able to resuscitate it. So so sad. Spending more time in nature can be both a blessing and a heartache. Realizing the mixed natures of both society as a whole and those we love is the same. I had just fed the cat, so she could not have been hungry. It is hard to accept killing for the pure pleasure of it…or that this tendency is in the nature of many aspects of nature, to one degree or another.
Just before this happened, I was informed that I’d been kicked off Facebook for going against community standards. I can’t help but wonder if there is a connection between the two. Your guess is as good as mine.

I don’t think cats kill for pleasure as we understand it. I don’t think their reasoning is like humans — “I’ve eaten. I’ll leave the oriole alone.” Something in the motion of the bird triggered the cat. Nature is a lot of things but sentimental isn’t one of its qualities. I spend so much time out there where things are killed that my philosophy is “Well someone ate.” Maybe it was a raptor, a coyote, a wild cat… Sometimes I can tell. I watched one of my huskies take town a squirrel just because the dog was a predator and the squirrel was prey, intruding on the dog’s territory. Cody gave me the squirrel. My aunt said, “Martha Ann, what do we do?” I said we should take it somewhere a scavenger could benefit. She looked at me strangely then said, “OK” so, we did. Cody was unlikely to eat it. It’s when people — who have a different system of reasoning behave this way — that I don’t get it. We’ve seen that this year. I’d sure like to see that Facebook post! I got thrown of Twitter (as was) for not being nice to Lauren Boebert) 🤣

You are, of course, right, Martha. I am just feeling incredibly sad and teary for the past few days. Don’t totally know why. I’ve buried the little bird in the same spot as another bird I tried to save years ago. I couldn’t stand to see my cats devour it. And, Facebook has restored me after determining I meet their community standards, whatever they are. I take it someone must have reported me. Don’t know why else they’d stage an investigation. Probably someone with an opposite view of what is going on in the world at large and the U.S. in particular.

I’ve been feeling sad and teary, too, and today for no reason I can find ,I’ve been completely exhausted. I’m sad at the way things are going, I’m troubled by the minor disputes they stimulate among friends all because we’re powerless. I am disgusted by the devaluation of things that matter. I know you feel the same way, but we can’t change anything so far. Some of my friends embrace a kind of activism that’s not for me. It’s a shit show. Here’s a big hug for you from Colorado, Judy. ❤️

Thanks, Martha. Friends here tell me that blogging is taking up all my time and detracting from finishing my books, but I must say that I feel like some of my blogging friends know more about my life than friends who live close by. Perhaps I need to just impose a limit to the numbers of hours spent on the blogging.

I have friends who don’t know why I write a blog. Honestly, I don’t either except I get something from it that I need and value even though I can’t define it other than “connection.” My post today is about that very thing. ❤️
