Avoidance
I’m tired of enlightenment, bored with my muse.
I give up on all topics that spur and enthuse.
I think I’ll be lazy for the rest of my life,
avoiding all effort and dodging all strife.
For what do I worry and ponder and seethe?
What care I for clean water and air we can breathe?
Let fools be our guides. Let them rule us all.
Let other fools follow them until they fall.
Let scientists fuss over theory and fractal.
I’ll deal with endeavors more sensual and tactile.
I’ll plot games of solitaire, fiddle with flowers,
play video games for hours and hours.
I’ll torment the cat and worry the dog,
lie in the hammock, my mind in a fog.
Let other folks solve all the world’s ills.
I’ll keep myself busy with vodka and pills.
Use avoidance to overcome all of my worries.
Let torpor eradicate all of my hurries.
I’m overlooking the problems in which the world’s mired.
If I need an excuse, It’s that I am retired.
The Sunday Poser question is “What do you always try to avoid?”

avoidance. Retreat. Who…YOU? I KNOW this is tongue in cheek but it makes a claim to universal feelings of helplessness. You’re not a quitter so there’s no way I could take these vows seriously! Love all your works!

Mainly, it is the chaos wreaked by Trump that I’m trying to avoid, Ann…not writing or art, although I haven’t had time to do art for about a year. Maybe art would be a better escape than writing, though, as writing constantly brings me back to the Internet to post…and Trump is always lurking there in the dark shadows. I am tired, though, and sort of sluffing off re/ finishing a couple of books. Are you writing at all now? Know you are doing lots of art, which I enjoy seeing.

Thanks, Ann. Just as you never quit giving support.

Haha, you’d have to stop being a poet ~ and that’s not going to happen! 😅

Obviously, we can’t… but every time I open the mail in the morning, I am tempted to trash the whole mess. Hard to face it every day. Please, may it soon be over.

Oh, Judy, your beautifully written poem describes and puts into the perspective the issues of today, as we live through, these turbulent times as a retiree.🫶🏾

So easy to give up but we can’t!!! And gladly it seems that many aren’t. May they continue to protest for all of us who can’t make it there. I just have to do so online…

I’m spending the summer at my home campground in Virginia, south of DC, so that I can catch the commuter train into DC, as I suspect there will be protests against the war, ICE, and funding for everything except American Taxpayers and National Park infrastructure.
I want to participate, capturing the moments in images, from the opposite side of the protest fence. Lol!👌🏾
