Dining Bird for Cellpic Sunday, Sept 15, 2024

I had just taken my last bite of Sweet and Sour Chicken in Min Wah, a popular Chinese restaurant in this part of Mexico, when I caught sight of this fellow diner, politely perched on the back of a chair between his two humans.  He sat there without moving for the entire time, watching them enjoy their meals–hopefully of a less avian nature.  I had to stop and talk to the humans on my way out. I neglected to get any names, but did learn that they had all cohabited for 32 years now. I told them of an African Grey I had once encountered as I walked through the local outside flea market in Santa Cruz, CA. He was on the shoulder of a man who wound up walking in front of me now and then most of the way, and off and on, had carried on a conversation that seemed impossible to me, even then. The bird seemed to understand what I said and to answer, as though we were carrying on a real conversation, and sometimes responded to my questions with questions of his own. When I told them this, they seemed unsurprised, as though this were common in the personality of African Greys. My human companion was patiently waiting outside for me to exit, so I garnered about 1/10th of the information I would have liked to have had the answer to, so I did a bit of research afterwards.

“Overall, African Grey parrots are highly intelligent and fascinating birds that are known for their exceptional cognitive abilities and their ability to mimic human speech. Their cognitive abilities have been studied extensively and they have been found to have similar cognitive power as a 4-year-old human child.” (From Dan’s Pet Care.) (From Judy: A study at Harvard found their reasoning ability to surpass that of a 5-year-old child! They live an average of 60 years, with some birds reaching 80 years old. Recently, the oldest known African Grey died at the age of 89.)

Calm Bunny For Cellpic Sunday

I spotted this rabbit who seemed unspooked in spite of the constant barking of a dog in the background. Then I noticed why the rabbit, unlike the dog, was unperturbed.

New Friends, for Cellpic Sunday

One given when I come to the states is a trip to Walmart to stock up on items I either can’t get in Mexico or that are cheaper here.  Yesterday, Marti and I were supposed to go out to dinner but when she arrived to pick me up, she asked if I’d mind if we went to Walmart instead.

There was a family–mom and dad with two little boys and a baby girl in front of me in line at checkout. They had two cart absolutely full of groceries plus school supplies for the boys as school starts next week. The baby was in a carrier right in front of me and we started flirting. She held her hand out to me and I shook it. She had a darling big plush toy and I was saying how cute it was. She just kept “talking” to me.. no words, just gobbledygook, and smiling and holding her hands out to me and we kept holding hands and flirting with each other.

I told her I liked her toy and asked to hold it. I hugged it (it was sooo soft and cuddly)  then gave it right back. The mom said they were from the Philippines and came because her husband’s mom arranged it. I asked where they worked, etc. She was a nurse in Veteran’s hospital. Then the mom took the plush animal and put it on the display beside the cash register, saying she just gave it to the baby to keep her busy while they were shopping but they weren’t going to buy it,  it was too expensive. When the mom wasn’t looking, one of the little boys took it off the display and gave it back to his little sister.  So sweet. He said to me, ‘She wants it.”

Long story short, I bought the toy and gave it to her. We’d traded names earlier and before they left, the mom told me they were going to name it Judy!  Such a fun time. The mom and dad both gave me hugs before they left.

Guadalajara to Houston to Denver, For Cellpic Sunday, Aug 11, 2024

It has been 17 1/2 hours since I set out on my journey from San Juan Cosala to Denver. It will be 10 more before I arrive in Sheridan. It is 1:40 A.M. and my plane doesn’t leave until 8 A.M. For some reason, although I could barely keep my eyes open on the cramped plane I flew from Houston on, now that I’m in a place where a couch is available, I’m wide awake. Sheridan tomorrow!!

“Raindrops” For Cellpic Sunday, Aug 4, 2024

Much as I hate ugly overhead wires that often destroy the view, I love how rain has transformed them above.

Nomad Art Exhibit, Ajijic for Cellpic Sunday, July 28, 2024

This Wild mural by Deedidit and unique collage painting were on view at Nomad Furniture Gallery in Ajijic. Wish I knew someone to give the duck/ducks to…but it’s too big for mailing anyway!!! (Sorry, I don’t know who did the Duckie Collage. Perhaps her, perhaps someone else.)

A Fan of Eudora Welty!! For Cellpic Sunday, July 7, 2024

(Pun intended.) One of my favorite stops in Jackson, Mississippi was Eudora Welty’s house…now a museum. Here hanging upside down from its handle with other fans on my curtain rod in my room is a fan I bought there.

Her house seemed to be left just as it was when she passed away. On the dining room table were pages of a manuscript cut into strips and pinned to the tablecloth… like  this was her method of seeing the segments together and reorganizing and editing them. I loved this!!! All of the awards and trophies she had won over the years were tucked away in her clothes closet out of sight to anyone but her. I love her stories and I think I would have loved her.

Mondays and Tuesdays for Cellpic Sunday

On Monday and Tuesday mornings, I teach these four charming students English. They are Eduardo, Pasiano’s son, Marie Jose and Alejandra, Yolanda’s nieces and Yoli, Yolanda’s daughter. So, instead of Cellpic Sunday, I guess these are my Cellpic Monday and Tuesday shots!

Nine years ago, Alejandra was one of the kids in a summer camp we threw for kids. Now she has two kids of her own! Here’s a picture of her way back then at age 12.

And  a picture of Yoli 9 years ago:

I didn’t meet Marie Jose until a year ago, but here she is
at her confirmation celebration one year ago:

And here is Eduardo ten years ago at the age of 4, coloring on
my terrace while his dad was making my garden beautiful:

My life is enriched by the wonderful young people of Mexico.

My friend Aurora generously drove me to Guad to try for the third time to get my papers straightened out. I got up at 5 A.M.to get ready to head out to Guad.. Got home at 5:30 P.M. It was a looooong day with lots of walking. Thanks, Aurora. They said they’ll let me know in 2 to 4 weeks if I am finally straightened out.
