Sticking to the Straight and Narrow

Sticking to the Straight and Narrow

(Mother Superior’s Rejoinder)

Please do not lollygag. There’s no time more.
We’re closing the shutters and locking the door.
Wipe those dreams from your brain, for it is our fear
that your thoughts will diverge from the prim and austere.
Make sure your spirit is pearl white and pure
with no sinful streaks to compete with demure.
Deadly sins number from one up to seven,
and striated souls will not make it to heaven.

This is one of my favorite photos, taken at the Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City. I love the one nun on the left, turned around to look back, plus the one with her arms crossed in back. I should perhaps crop it a bit on the right. Will next time I use it.

I took this photo 15 years ago at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. I love the position of the arms of the fourth nun from the right and how the third nun from the left has twisted around to look behind her, plus the three feet kicked up as though skipping or doing a small jig.  A friend I showed it to asked me what I would name a group of nuns and this started a back and forth conversation of suggestions.  With this in mind, I have two requests to make of you.

  1. Please post your favorite photo that you’ve ever taken on your blog, Facebook,  Instagram or Twitter page and post a link to it in the comments below.
  2. Then give your idea of what you would call a group of nuns. Do not Google to see what a group of nuns is actually called. That’s cheating and also might block your own creativity.  Please also share this with us via comments.
  3. Here are my ideas:
    A murmuring of nuns.
    A habit of nuns.
A cloister of nuns.. oops.. cluster.
    Girls of the hood

    A squadron of nuns
    A file of nuns
    A river of nuns
    A flotilla of nuns

This is one of my all-time favorite photos, taken at the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City.  I’ve been waiting for the proper chance to use it for a loooooong time.  Now, finally, the perfect prompt!  I love the one young nun turning around to look behind her–the rest blithely marching along–seemingly straight into that wall!
