When my camera conked out in Wyoming, I stopped at Best Buy to buy a new one, then realized I needed a spare battery. Thinking it would be cheaper on the internet, I decided to wait, but I quickly learned the battery for this very new model was not available online. Researching camera stores on Google, I discovered that one of only two camera stores remaining in Wyoming was in Casper, which we were due to travel through on our route to Cheyenne. When we found it, there were three members of the military being served so as I wandered the shop–basically one long counter, I found this retablo, I had to photograph it. How better to worship at the shrine of photography?
When it was finally my turn, I asked why there were so few camera stores in Wyoming and received an answer I should have guessed. The internet and large chain stores such as Best Buys and Costco had made dedicated camera stores obsolete. I was very grateful to have found this one. I was also pleased to find that these rechargeable batteries last at least 5 times longer than the batteries in my old camera.

Very cool shot. I’m afraid that dedicated photography shops have vanished in more places than just Wyoming. Between big box stores and Amazon, it’s tough to stay in business.

That shot is so cool! Save it well. It is really sad to see small businesses collapse under the weight of these big chain stores 🙂

I know. I’m torn, because I love Costco. In Mexico they still have both…Small towns have little stores every block or two and still have shops to buy cups and paper plates, leather goods, Mom and Pop mini stores, etc. I love it.

I love those mom and pop stores. The personal touch and they almost feel like family 🙂

We never did have much in the way of shopping around here. The only places i know where camera stores — brick and mortar — are alive and well are in downtown New York city … and there’s ONE right near Boston. We used to have one locally, but they really were rip-off artists. You know what has also bit the dust? Custom photo labs.

Where do people get photos developed if they need to? Do they have to do it themselves? I imagine there are still labs to send them to.

Same here. We had 2 or 3 smaller camera/photo stores around, but no more. The closest one is over an hour away.
I really love that photo, btw!

I love this retablo. At first I thought it was one you might have made. Nice find! We actually have a camera store just a few minutes from the house and just a few steps away from a good German restaurant so you can satisfy a few desires in one trip.
