It is a garden slug, all stretched out. I thought it was just a tear in the flower or a bit of garden refuse until I enlarged it. To the left and up a bit from the whorl in the center of the main flower.

Wow, this is like one of those “find the … ” puzzles. I see an eye, a nose … wait … is that part of the flower or the head of a mouse?

This time it is an actual creature–I believe. Isn’t that striped thing a slug? Or is it a bent over edge of the petal? I am as plagued by the riddle as you are.

I grew them for years and years, but was really unsure — I dunno. I think you get old enough and so many people and flowers and various things pass through your life then are no longer part of it that it’s just naturally confusing. Anyway, they’re great flowers and I saw the slug right away.

I find myself forgetting things I knew perfectly well. I think I called them calla lilies when I posted pics before. And the other mystery flower that looks totally unlike them was also a calla..and is called by the exact same name online. Marilyn told me the name of that one. I love knowing the names of flowers and so I appreciate being educated–and reminded. ha.

Calla lilies are sort of trumpet shaped. Cannas grow on canes.

What is the matter with me, Martha? Now I’m confusing cannas and calla lilies! Good grief. Ah well, they are beautiful by any name but now I need to check my blog again. Must admit, however, that I never could remember which was which and now they’ve just sort of blended into one. Keep me straight!!!

I couldn’t keep them straight until I planted calla lilies and realized the root (ha ha) of canna is cane and they grow on canes and are a lot taller. Honestly, I didn’t care but once I got it I got it — I still don’t care much. Just want them to grow if I plant them. Those yellow ones with red spots are so wonderful because they can get interesting mutations of like half-red and half yellow with red spots. I had orange ones with purplish leaves when I lived in San Diego. Those were quite dramatic.

They were here when I came and just keep coming up. They aren’t my favorites, but they do give good color and it is fun to see them just appear suddenly.

Do you agree it is a slug and not a curled over part of the leaf? Now I’m confused about what I really see. Serves me right.
