Entrance to the Tile House
Fraccionamiento La Floresta, Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico
If you think this front door is wild, you should see the rest of the house! Although I was told it was built by John Robert Powers who founded the Powers Modeling Agency, I later received this comment from Adriana Cornejo, who seems to know much more about the house than I do. Thanks, Adriana. One of the things I like best about blogging is how much I’ve learned from comments expanding or pointing out misinformation in my blogs. Here is what Adriana says:
Walter Thornton the owner (not John Robert Powers, who was his competitor) spent 30 years building this house. He bought the house when it was under construction and added many rooms through the years. He traveled to Guadalajara very often to buy tile and had it delivered to the house. Then he worked on the designs, his hands where always blistering from the cement. He employed 2 to 3 people at all times, all this while raising 6 kids. He wanted to build 6 bungalows, one for each kid, but he died before this could happen. The property has 3 bungalows. You can check his bio HERE.
Look below at barbwit’s comment if you’d like to see another fantastic tile house in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
You see that sort of thing quite a lot in the middle east … but MUCH bigger and even more intricate. I wonder if that’s where he got the idea. Great pix!

Thanks, Marilyn. I need to check out my info, though. The next door neighbor is a friend so I’m pretty sure the info is correct unless the wife was lying!

barbwit..I just now for the first time found your photos of the tile house in Albuquerque. Thanks so much for sending them. You must have wondered why I never thanked you!! So fun. I love the medicine chest and the care with which she designed everything. Gives new meaning to my wine lable and bottlecap covered kitchen cupboard!!

Speaking of bottlecaps, Judy, my sister in Vancouver – who makes my special earrings – had some with two caps stuck together which I have been wearing.Lots of people (even a young man on the tube) said “I like your earrings.” Su was very hurt that the comments I’ve had have been mostly about those ones and not the lovely, handcrafted ones she spends so much time and care on. Sad but true.

I have made bottle cap earrings as well and bought a pair made by local ladies just last year. I love them and yes get lots of comments.

Wow…. Think of the time that it took to ‘decorate’ that entire thing.

I wonder if he picked out tile every time he passed a tile place and had it added or if he bought it all before he built and had it done as the house was being built? Or did his wife do it? Guess we’ll never know.

Wow! The blue made my eyes water. We have a tree in the neighborhood with blue Christmas lights on it. It does the same thing. I must be allergic to blue!

There is a color of blue that bothers me so much that I once had to close my eyes and have my husband lead me out of a museum installation that was painted that color. And, I hate the custom blue lights they sometimes put around license plates and along rear bumpers here. I know just what you mean! They give me headaches.

The house was built by the famous Model Agent Walter Thornton the creator of the “Pinup Girls.” His family currently own the house.

Since publishing this photo, I’ve met the daughter of the man who built it and started up a correspondence with her. I love that about blogging.
